I'm pretty sure the power supply is OK since when unplugged from the m/b it will turn on. a spare supply also doesn't turn on - not even wiggle for the fan.
the five beeps aren't happening anymore. I've measured all the voltage inputs to the board, and they all act like capacitors (no shorts or opens). Two different power supplies fail to turn on (and the PG signal remains false). I can't measure an current surge at turn on on all the power connections, and I think it isn't 12V because the 8-pin connector can be connected and the supply will turn on (otherwise disconnected).
This particular M/B is out of stock everywhere but at some usurious places that want the price of a server.
Manual says I need two, and that doesn't help. I've also closely inspected all the electrolytic caps and I don't see any bulging and don't measure any shorts.
SuperMicro tech support says the unit will not turn on without a processor/fan. No other components necessary. If I ground the front panel power on pin, absolutely nothing happens (not even a small flinch of the fan). If I then ground the PS-ON pin on the power connector, the fans (power supply and CPU) turn on. Anyone know if there's a way to determine if it's the m/b or the processor without spares? I'd kill for a schematic of the circuitry between the front panel connector and the PS-ON pin...
