X800 GT AGP vs X600 PCIx

I was wondering if the AGP X800 and 6800 video cards are currently faster than the new X600 and PCX 5900 PCI express cards available on the market.

I know that the speed of PCI express is much faster than agp but do then why are the X800 and 6800 line of cards more exprensive than the x600 and PCX 5900?

PCIex basically does not do a helluva lot for video card speed. AGP is 95% as good.

It's the VIDEO CHIPSET that makes it powerful... the slot type and amount of RAM are barely a factor.

An AGP X800 with 128mb will absolutely destroy a PCIex X600 with 256mb any day of the week.

Let me try this again because I did not explain it very well. (one of those sounds right in your head but didn't come out right things)

I am building a new computer and wanted to know if I should get a new 925 chipset MB with PCI express and a PCI express video card like the X600 XT or go with an not so new MB with AGP and get a X800 or 6800 line of card.

Just wanted to know if the if PCI express card having the faster bus would make any difference compared to the agp. Cleeve has answered my question and I thank him.

Now, I presume a PCI express X800 would be faster than an AGP X800 correct?

currently both paltforms i believe are in power. unless memory subsystem of PCIe chipset becomes better, like faster DDR2 mem, it wont perform better than the AGP system

I would expect the PCIe system to give a marginally better result all things being equal (memory as priyajeet said, and motherboard chipset), but certainly less than 5% and not noticable with the human eye.

This may change in the future however; PCIe may indeed offer noticable benefits over AGP, but it probably won't happen for at least a year, maybe two.

In short: go with the not-so-new mobo and high-end video card! Although CPU upgradability is important, too...

One interesting thing to note is the ATI cards are native PCIe, where as the NVidia cards use a bridge chip, Nvidia claims this has no negative impact on performance, although i have a hard time believing that the bridge chip doesnt impact performance at all, what other value this information has i dont know. :tongue:

if you read opteron reviews vs xeon, all comes down to the memory subsystem handling. i take it you are oign in for an intel based system. I wud personally go in for PCIe bcos it can only get better from now on. AGP is good, but we wont see any improvements in that architecture now. go for the latest with max upgradibility possibility.
