Hi all,
Im not any hardware guru or anything so i can only keep this simple 😀

I just got a:
Atlon 64 3 gig
2x 512mb DDR Twister
and i want a X800 XT videocard.

Now ive been asking around and heard that with the card i will need a new kind of PCI slot for the card, PCI Espress i beleve.

So what mainborad should i get to get the most out of the system??? Id realy hate to get a mainboard and discover its holding my card back...

All help is appreciated.
Greets
Bob.

P.S Im slightly wordblind, so if i made spelling mistakes, please forgive.

You will only need the PCIExpress slot, if you buy a PCIExpress card, instead of an AGP. Right now, there isn't anything to gain really for PCIExpress over AGP, the cards just can't use the extra bandwidth.

Also currently PCIExpress, for the most part is on mainly on Intel boards. AMD should start supporting this very soon though.

PCIExpress is sort of the new upcoming thing, but won't be a must if you buy an AGP card.

Ahhhhhhhh, that exsplanes alot... i didnt know that yet :)

But say you were going to get a mainbord for this system, what would you recomend??

The X800 seies is available in the new PCIexpress slot and there is also the AGP8x versions available. Either slot, you will not notice a performance difference, since the card does not exceed the thoroughput of either bus.

that depends? do you have the AGP or the PCIExpress version of the card??

After doing some searhing, I concur with Mr5Oh, I couldn't find and AMD 64 based boards with PCIExpress slots...You may want to look into replace you card with a AGP version, and look at getting a MSI K8N NEO2 Platinum Motherboard

XP2200+, Abit NF7, 1GB Dual-Channel DDR333, ATI R9800PRO 128MB, SB Live! 5.1 Digital, TT PurePower 420W, Samsung 120GB, Maxtor 120GB, LG DVD+-R/RW, WIN2K PRO SP4
Edited by sparky853 on 08/30/04 03:11 PM.

I will be getting the AGP version since the advantages seem to be minimal. The boards seem to me alot more exspencive aswell...

• Supports up to 3500+, 3800+ Athlon 64 FX 53, or higher CPU

But i have a 3000+... so it doesnt support my procesor, right???

What says that: "Supports up to 3500+, 3800+ Athlon 64 FX 53, or higher CPU"

One of the boards you were looking at? Your 3000+ 64-bit chip is socket 754? You may have been looking at a scoket 939 motherboard. Make sure you are looking at the right motherboard for you chip.

This is the version of the K8N board you need (Socket 754):
