The source engine uses pixel shader 2.(something) to simulate HDR, while BF2 and most other games with HDR need pixel shader 3.0 (wich the x850 doesn't have). Better?

Well, it's not 'simulated'... it's actual HDR.

Any Radeon 9550/X300 or better is capable of HDR.

The new shader model 3.0 cards are capable of a PARTICULAR method of HDR called 'OpenEXR'. Some games are using this method of HDR, like Age of Empires 3, Far Cry, etc.

Games like Half Life use a non-OpenEXR method of HDR which any DirectX 9 compatible card can use. (Except maybe the Geforce FX series, not sure about those)

What about the R9500? :tongue:

The FXs can do it, but like we saw in the Rthdribl demo they get clobbered when enabling HDR.

Good description of HDR and Valve's implementation (and the ones they decided not to use) I keep pointing people to is the ARStechnica article;
