Xbox won't connect to Internet with ethernet cable!

So I am in a College dorm and the only access to internet we have is by connecting an Ethernet cable to the connection in the wall and straight to the computer. That is how I have internet as we speak and it works fine. Problem is, that when I plug it in into the xbox it doesnt even connect to the network, why is this???? HELP

Do you get link lights when you plug the network cable in? (Not sure if Xbox has link lights.)
Do you need to log in to the internet in the dorm? Like with you student users ID and password.
Have you ever plugged the xbox in on another network to confirm it is working?
