XP Backup Program

I am running XP home and recently loaded the backup program from the
install disk. When I try to run a backup, the program gives an error
message when I select the "D" drive (CD-RW). It says: "The backup
file name could not be used. Please specify a valid location and
name for the backup file."

No combination of names / no name will allow use of the CD-RW drive.

Any ideas?

Windows Backup Does Not Back Up to CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD-R Devices

I personally use and like BackUP MyPC from stomp. Unlike Windows Backup
program it will backup directly to CD or DVD. Last I looked they had a
thirty day free trial.

This is strange, because I have been using Ntbackup with XP-Home every week
to back up my critical files to a CD-RW. Why it works for me I don't know.
Using a Dell 8200. I have also tested the restore function of the same
program and it works fine too. A work-around I guess would be to copy the
files first to your hard disk and then drag them to the CD-RW.

no longer a 'stomp' product, but sold by sonic... the makers of the dell
supplied cdrw recording software. but even the older 'stomp' version of
backupmypc integrates into the sonic program menu.

Stomp is good, it was bought from Veritas a couple of years ago, and
Veritas stuff has always been first rate.

Don't feel bad, I was pulling my hair out trying to figure this out also.
This is what I found out about the error.
I have XP Home edition, so it isn't supported. Go figure!

This is from the Readme file on the Windows XP CD.
(ASR means Automatic System Restore)

NTBackup Backup/Restore and ASR release notes

Backup/Restore

ASR

1. ASR is not supported on home edition.

IF you install NtBackup from the CD to the Home Edition, ASR functionality
will appear to work fine during the backup session. Since the setup does
not support ASR in the home edition, there is no way to initiate the ASR
restore in case of a disaster. If you need to restore from this session,
install Windows XP manually and then restore from the ASR media.

2. Backup to CDRW

If you decide to backup to a CDRW, you cannot target that device directly.
You must create a backup set of 650MB or less and backup to a file. After
the file is complete, copy the file to the CDRW.

Please refer to the readme for XP home edition for additional notes.


Or use another backup software as stated already, but if you're like me
you like to know the reason this happened, right?
