XP crashes on boot

Hello,

Can anyone advise me please? XP crashes and restarts the PC from the
beginning as soon as it reaches the point where the Windows XP desktop would
normally appear. Trying to boot in Safe Mode provokes the same behaviour at
the same point in the boot sequence ... howver, swapping the HDD for a drive
with Windows 98SE loaded onto it allows me to boot up and run OK under that
OS, so I'm fairly sure that it's an XP fault (virus maybe). AVG7 didn't bark
before this happened, and ZoneAlarm didn't report anything either. Any
advice greatly welcome.

I suggest you Disable automatic restart on system failure. Just to see if you can get a STOP code, or if you can login to Safe mode, then it's possible you can restart the system in normal mode later on.

When the pc is booting up (after the BIOS has done its POST test and
before Windows starts loading),
Tap F8 Function key to get bootup options. Tap & keep repeat tapping F8 !

You will actually see "Disable automatic restart on system failure" as an option .
Select that and give it a try. This option is available if you have XP service pack 2.

Once restart on failure is disabled, you should get a STOP error with
text --- at the next problem.
Write it all down, and then start searching for the final solution.
And post back here with the STOP code & text.

B) If no stop code, and still unable to login to Safe mode, reboot pc, repeat the F8 tap, select the option with "VGA mode".
See if you can login.

If still unable to get into any mode......
Last, C) I'd do F-8 Function-key selective bootup and try hard to use Last Known Good.

Some success right away - a new light-blue screen that I'd glimpsed
briefly on previous boot attempts.

Thanks very much - the light-blue screen with white text says:

"STOP Code c0000221 {Bad Image Checksum}"

"The image lz32.dll (LZ32.DLL, for better clarity - those are LLLs, not
111s) is possibly corrupt. The header checksum does not match computed
checksum."

Does this mean that something has corrupted this system file, and if so
how do I restore it please? Or is it a 'reload' situation? Any clues on what
might have carried out the attack?

The problem was that it wouldn't let me go any further in, or start
Windows etc. Should it have?

No - the machine is stand-alone, so I didn't see that that would help me
(that's not meant to be an obtuse answer, BTW).

I want you to select Safe Mode with Networking, please. And if you can just
login, you'd be able to do the fix as I outline earlier. "with networking"
is not limited to a multiple-pc setup. Anyone can use it.

Philip,
If you are still stuck, repeat the process to get into Recovery Console (by booting from XP CD).
Once at the Command prompt, see what your Windows folder name is (Windows or WINNT --- and use that for %windir% below )

The Expand command syntax to recopy the LZ32 is, as follows:
EXPAND X:\I386\LZ32.DL_ Y:\%WINDIR%\SYSTEM32\LZ32.DLL

where X is the CD drive letter
Y is the drive letter for your HD where Windows is
(btw, there's a space after expand. a space after DLunderscore )

Recovery console is working fine. Type help for help. Look at expand.
