XP Home disk for 3000

Hello, All!

Just bought a 3000 for my wife. Included was an OEM disk for the Dell. Yours
truly has always rolled his own PC so this 'out of box' experience is new
for me.

The question: Is the XP home disk included a "recovery" disk which will put
the OS and all of the garbage back on the computer or is it a true OS disk
that one could install clean on her formatted 3000 and thus get rid of all
of the garbage overhead they send with this thing?

Thanks.

Colonel Blip.

Depends- till now Dell supplied only OS and al garbage on different CDs. But
I heard rumours that the newer ones in USA are different. Give it a try. If
it boots from CD and wants to initate a setup it is a real OS.

The CD should be the real OS. There should be a Restore partition on the
hard drive to return it to 'new'.

Personally, I FDisk'd the drive to get rid of the extra partition, and then
I reinstalled windows from scratch.

I'm tempted to do just that although I've spent a couple of hours getting it
up and running with my apps installed. There is definitely a lot of 'bloat'
with it. I also would like to partition the 40 gb drive at least 3 ways.

Thanks.

If you do this, let us know the results. Most vendors including Gateway are
sending restore disks that do not give the option to partition and reinstall
from scratch. Only restore to factory config.

Dell doesn't send restore disks. They send real XP disks. Some machines
are only coming with restore partitions now (I hear), but if it came with an
XP disk, it's a 'real' one.

I just purchased a pair of 3000 machines, and they both came with the "real"
XP Home CDs along with the applications CD and WordPerfect CD.

How easy is it to create a 'real' disk from the windows directory? It used
to be mainly a matter of copying the cab files to a cd.

I don't know a way to do so.
