upgraded W98 to XP pro, then installed 2nd hard drive. It shows up in bios and device manager but does not show in "my computer" or "explorer". When you type in drive letter in explorer it says that the drive is password protected? Any help so that I can utilize this drive would be great.

A few questions:

Is the hard drive partitioned and formatted? Did you do this with a third-party program such as a disk manager/disk overlay tool, something like Partition Magic, or with a startup disk?

Are you logged in as the Administrator?

Did you have TweakUI installed in Win98 before upgrading to WinXP? If so, the program may have hidden a drive letter or two. You can fix that by clicking the applet in the Control Panel and unchecking the hidden drive letters.

Can you gain access to the drive in Safe Mode or at the Command Prompt with a startup disk, or by typing the drive letter (what it should be) in the Start/Run line and clicking Okay?

Are there any errors in the Event Log?

Which cable did you use to install the drive? Same cable as the Primary drive, or on the Secondary channel? Is the drive jumpered correctly?

What kind of drive is it? System specifications, please.

this is a friends comp...the (wd 20gb hdd) was put in right out of the box, not 3rd party partitioned. He is the Administrator, and it did have TweakUI on it in 98, but it doesn't show it now. And it is the same cable as the primary and the jumpers are right.
It has the asus TUSL2-C mb, PIII 1000,25mg ram(133),primary hdd is a wd 20gb also, a 32x cd rom, and a yamaha 40/16/10 burner, a sound blaster live card, ati rage 128 video, and linksys nc100 nic card.
the event log didn't have any errors that had to do with the drive.
I'am not in front of the comp right now, so I hope that this info helps, it has me lost......

Thanks for your time......

I've seen a couple of situations in the past when TweakUI was previously installed in Win98, and then the OS was upgraded to Win2K, causing certain driver letters to be unaccessible in My Computer and Windows Explorer, but visible in the Device Manager and Safe Mode.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the same thing happen in WinXP.

Perhaps if your friend installed another, similiar tweaking program like this one, (or something from this page) he would once more be able to access all the drive letters. Of course, a fresh, clean installation would probably be the best course, just to get rid of all the excess bloat left from the previous OS. And that should also clean up the drive letter situation.

It would be nice to install the WinXP Power Toys, but unless you know someone with a copy, it can't be downloaded. Microsoft removed them from the ConXion sites, and they won't be posted again until Spring. Maybe.

That's assuming TweakUI is the culprit. But that's what it sounds like to me.

Write back if you get a chance, and tell me if the drive can be reached at a Command Prompt or in Safe Mode. If that's possible, I'm pretty sure the drive letters can be made accessible again.

See ya ...

I'm running xp home edition, and just added a second hdd, you have to go into the control panel, administrative tools, computer management, disk management and initialize the new hdd(by right clicking, and hit intialize) once the hdd has been initalized, go to My Computer and right click the drive to format. Hope this helps, it solved my problem in xp home! JW

What he said! I ran into the same issue... assuming it was like installing a drive in 98... went to the WD website and it laid it all out.

I've been to the mountain and didn't like what I saw.
