XP Problems

I got Windows XP and during the install (during the initial blue screen after you boot from CD.) It stops at random times saying it can not copy the file or the image is bad. If I restart the computer, it may stop at a totally different place. And sometimes it works without any problem at all.

And this is all after a clean NTFS format.

Then during the main install after it rebooted, the computer either hangs, blue-screens, or weird error messages appear. And it all appears at completely different times. And they all say a different error message every single time I restart the computer.

I've checked the Microsoft HCL site and all my hardware is compatible with XP. So I know that isn't a problem.

I have been told that it is very possible that one or more of my RAM modules is bad. Is that a possibility? Because my 2k OS was starting to become unstable before I upgraded to XP. The system used to be very stable, and I've made no changes to the hardware. So I am led to believe it is a hardware issue and something has gone bad.

Could it be the CD-Rom drive as well? I havn't had any problem with it before.

Any ideas? Thanks.
Edited by jerry292 on 04/08/02 11:14 PM.

It might be a faulty power supply that isn't giving a steady stream of power to your components, causing it to crash. If it's not a good brand, like Antec, Sparkle, PC Power & Cooling, or Enermax, it might be of decent quality.

If it's not the power supply, you can test your memory using MemTest86. (Be sure to read the instructions!)

Good luck!

Well I put in a new power supply unit and dropped my RAM down to 128MB and XP installed fine and seems to be working fine now.
Thanks for the help.

I'm glad you're up and running again...

By the way, so you're not gonna test your other memory stick? XP will run so much better with more memory, plus you can run more apps at the same time. I don't know, it's no use wasting that stick, unless you have the money to burn. Eh...it's up to you. Later!

Well I've tried inserting it, and in windows, if I run any memory intense programs, I get a blue screen that says Memory_Management_Error or a stop error with 0x0000008E which Microsoft says is a RAM problem.

So I think it is a bad stick. Because if I take it out, I don't get those errors.

It's possible the stick got screwed up with the power supply. Something blew my surge protector about a month ago but don't remember any surge. So something happened there that might have caused some damage to the memory stick. But it is pretty strange, I'll have to try loading in a stick that I know is good and see if it works, maybe the slot is bad or something.

Well, like I suggested, to make sure, run MemTest86. Then, if it's a bad stick, hopefully it's on lifetime warranty, so you can return it. But, that is strange...
