XP Professional recovery console cannot detect hard drive

Hi,

When I attempted to start my computer, which is running Windows XP
Professional Edition, this morning, I received an error message saying

Invalid Boot.ini
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
Windows\System32\Hal.dll

I researched this issue in the Microsoft Knowledge Base, which said to boot
from the Windows XP CD-ROM and use the Recovery Console to perform the
repairs. However, when I did, it said that Windows could not detect any hard
drives and could not continue.

How do I fix my computer???

If no hard drives are detected, then this would be a hardware failure.
Is the drive detected in the BIOS? Enter Setup and see.

If the hard drive is not detected in the BIOS, here are a few
troubleshooting suggestions. As always, make one change at a time and
test after each change.

1. With the computer off and unplugged, open the case and reseat the
ribbon cable and power supply connector to the drive. Is it seen now?
If not -

2. Swap out the ribbon cable for a known-working one.

3. Put the hard drive in a different computer. Is it seen there? If yes,
then the original machine's motherboard has a problem. If no, then the
drive has failed and is toast. Replace it.

Hardware troubleshooting involves swapping out suspected parts with
known-good parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are
uncomfortable opening your computer, take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigStoreUSA).

Boot with a Windows 98 Startup disk and use the command - fdisk.exe /status -
to see if it detects your drive (if your drive is NTFS, it'll still recognize
it - it just won't be able to do anything with it.

Don't use any of the other fdisk commands - you could accidentally erase
your hard drive with this tool.

Any SCSI, RAID or SATA hard disk? Remember to provide the appropiate drivers by pressing F6 before entering the Recovery Console.

I have 2 RAID 0 hard drives. This is probably a stupid question, but where do
I get the drivers from? Will they be on a CD that came with the computer?

Yes, on the CD there should be the appropiate drivers for the RAID controller and an utility so as to make a floppy disk. If that utility is not included, the RAID controller manual should provide instructions to create one manually. Windows Setup only supports third party drivers in floppy disks, not CD-ROMs.
