I just picked up an external harddrive and my system feels it when I
plug it in-- the lovely "bong" sound tells me so.

I looked in the remove hardware menu and it's there:
oxford semiconductor ide device 1394

But no drive is added in my computer.

Any ideas out there?

thanks,
g

It needs to be initialised for Windows to use it.

Open Computer Management
Click START> RUN
Type in 'compmgmt.msc' and press enter

CLick on Disk Management and highlight the new drive
Right click and Partition / Format or whatever you need: partition first
before formatting.
