Hi - upgrading from WIN98SE - I'm used to scheduling my daily scandisk,
my weeky defrag, and doing a scanreg /fix /opt once a month. Do I have
to do any of this with XP - if so, how?

Hi

It's not critical to have that defrag and scanreg done automatically
by XP. Typically I run a manual defrag (from Start menu) once every 2
weeks or so.

SCANREG is no longer included and also not necessary in Windows XP.
SCANDISK has been replaced by CHKDSK and you can schedule this program
as well as DEFRAG if you like.
Create a Scheduled Task for any application and then open the
Properties. Overwrite the command-line with the proper CHKDSK/DEFRAG
command.
For help with the commands type
DEFRAG /?
CHKDSK /?
at a DOS prompt.

CHKDSK is not necessary to be run regularly on NTFS drives. But you
should run Defrag from time to time. You can also this from the Start
Menu.
