Would like to know the best configuration for XP Pro on a home computer - it does not seem to be one person friendly - got Pro when I got the new computer, as all the review's I read beforehand recommended it as the better more secure system - and it was before media edition came out although I do have the t.v. card , remote etc.. and cannot install ME on this computer without drastic changes ?

Most of the services that Microsoft likes you to leave running in XP Pro - I do not need it is a home computer - I play games on it , read the news and look into things I am interested in - creating web pages etc. or running their firewall I have no interest in, besides their firewall is not compatable with my router . Basically I would like a list of services that can be shutdown without interfering in syst. perfomance or security - have read a lot on the help pages etc. and have configured it to recommended settings .

That's a matter of personal preference. I find that the majority of services are quiescent in the background, when they're not being used, and have little, if any impact on performance.

This was more a matter of security than performance - as most of the security notices say that turning off unneed or unused services was a good idea , I don't think I need web client or server running but am not sure - have found out that my printer will not work if printer spooler is not running - will check the blackviper page. thanks
