XP - slow wireless?

Alright, so there is two computers. One is a Vista laptop, and the other is a desktop.

The laptop can get a full 15mbps on a speed test on speedtest.net (using Montreal) - on wireless, beside the desktop. The desktop computer can only get 4-6mbps on the SAME speed test (Montreal)..
I've also tried a different network adapter, gives the same results..

Any fixes for xp so I can get my real speed? I would go wired - but I don't want to have to drill a hole in the ceiling/floor (router is on first floor, desktop is in the basement).

out of curiosity is the desktop using an older wireless card?

the only thing that comes to mind is that the desktop is using an 11b card and the laptop has a newer 11g/n card.

Was the speed test on the laptop done at the desktop's location?

Antenna and signal pattern are usually optimized for the horizontal not vertical.
Have you tried repositioning the antennas?

It's a few months old; it's g, don't worry

Yes. Pretty much where the card sits.


The adapter I'm using is a Belkin F5D7050 v5 ( pic ). It's on a stand it came with, so it's not at ground level.
The router is directly above me, pretty much.

The router is a Linksys WRT54G.
