i purchased windows xp pro upgrade. i am building a system, with some parts from my old compaq (licensed copy of win98), and don't plan to use the compaq anymore. how can i install xp after i fdisk and format the new drive? boot with my win98 emergency boot disk? can the upgrade version even be installed on a blank hard drive? i'm still building the system...just want this info ahead of time. thanks

Yes, as long as you provide proof of a previous version of Windows (by simply inserting the CD). I forgot if WinXP PRO version can upgrade from Win98 - somebody confirm that?

I just went throu all this. You cant run XP setup.exe under DOS. What i did was i installed a barebones copy of 98, then upgraded 98 to XP. When it rebooted, i changed it to Upgrade to Full Unstall and changed to Fat to NTFS.

I didnt need my 98 disk at all.

You can run it by booting directly from the Upgrade CD. In your BIOS change your boot order to cd as the first device and exit saving your settings. When you reboot, hit the spacebar when prompted, to boot from the CD. (Some systems will prompt you NOT to hit any key to boot from CD, all depends on which one you have).
