xp2700+ high temperature

Hi,
I was checking the temperature of my cpu today and I think there might be a problem.

I have a xp2700+ (333 fsb) with a volcano 9 (with bleu/red leds) on it. The system is not overclocked(13x166=2158Mhz). In Idle, I get 64C and when I start UT2003 the temp jump to 70C.

It seems pretty high to me. I also have 5 antec fans in my case. 2 front intakes, 1 side intake and 2 back outakes.

Do you think that my volcano 9 might not be installed properly?

Funny thing is I overclock the fsb to 191Mhz and put the mult to 11.5 (191x11.5 = 2196.5Mhz) and everything works fine. The temps is still 64 idle but can jump to 74 when ut2003 start.

Should I worry and check to change the thermal paste? I don't know what paste I have, I did not intalled it myself.

Those temps do seem a little high - but I would expect some stability issues to appear, especially at 74C, so I'm wondering if those temps are being reported correctly. What are you using to check those temperatures? Try comparing a couple of different programs (e.g. MBM5, Sandra) and the BIOS readings, to see if they all agree. (MBM5 reports complete crap on my system)

The OC example won't make <b>that much</b> difference, as the total clock speed is similar.

Get your system up to temp then remove the cover and touch the heatsink. A teperature in excess of about 55 degrees is uncomfortable to touch for more than a few seconds.

If your heatsink is not that hot then either the wrong temps are being reported or the heatsink is not making propper contact.

btw, make sure the fan on it is working.

I use mbm5 to monitor the temperature. And I think the temperature it gave me is correct because when I reboot and go in the bios, it says 59-60C, which is pretty close of what mbm5 give me in idle.
I will try sandra though.

And I have open my case and touch my heatsink when the cpu is at 60C. It is a little hot, but not that much. I can keep my finger on the side of the heatsink for as long as I want. It doesn't hurt.

In that case, if your PC is running stable it's safe to say the thermal calibration of your onboard sensor is out. Sometimes a new BIOS release can address this issue.

I would try setting up another sensor in MBM5 that uses the S-Diode in the CPU to get a temperature reading.

You might be right. Because it doesn't crash and the heatsink is not that hot. There must be something with the sensor.

BTW, I Use the W83L785TS-S Diode in mbm5. It's the only one sensor that give me a temp that change when I start ut2003 and get back down when I close it.

One system I assembled with XP 1800+ with the AMD supplied heatsink and fan crosses 90c when playing quake 3.After reassembled it is now working at 70 normally and crosses 80 when playing games.A good heatsink or thermal paste is not available in the market here(Chennai,India).You are a lucky man!!!!!!!!!

First thing I have to ask you is what your room temperatures are? Also where do you live?.

Climate usually has the biggest affect on your temps!

I live in Canada(Quebec) so it's pretty hot now on the middle of the summer. But my room is not too hot. Got an air clim 3 meters away of my comp. So I would say the room temp is normal.

But I'm beginning to think that the antec fan are not really good. I never saw other fans, but those one I have doesn't seems to push enough.

I will surely check the thermal paste in the comings weeks. I don't know how to take off the cpu fan I have but it would be a good experience! 😱)

Also, My vcore is at 1.71V. Is it ok? I saw yours is at 1.65V. Well actually it is set at 1.65 in the bios menu, but even the bios hardware monitoring read it back at 1.71V. Weird.

A year or so ago, I used an AMD Athlon XP 2100+ (Palomino), and ASUS A7V333, the record temp was 83 degrees without stability issues...that's a temp to speak about ;P

I'm sure PC Probe was somewhat misreporting, but the HSF was hot as hell.
