[YAAP] The ultimate Great Save

As Dangifino the lawful human Valkyrie, I arrive on the Astral Plane wearing
a ring of conflict -- I really don't know what's so great about guardian
angels, and I find it much more to my advantage to have *everything*
kicking butt on my behalf. In the resulting melee, a black dragon is
generated. Once it's all over, I eat the black dragon, satiating myself to
the hilt.

Blindfold check: Death left, Famine center, Pestilence right. Being good
and ready for Famine, I head to the center branch.

Alas, the altar is to Loki.

Back out and head left, to face Death. Death gets in a couple of hits, I
lose a few hit points, but win through to the altar.

The altar to Odin. Drat. Time to face Pestilence.

I come back out, and find several priests turned to stone. Uh-oh! Someone
has a cockatrice corpse. Sure enough, he finds me.

"Your limbs are stiffening." I take a bite of lizard -- remember that black
dragon? -- and my AoLS was the only reason I'm not posting a YASD here.

I forget how I actually killed the SOB, but I did have to pray because he
whacked me again with that chicken. On to face Pestilence.

I blast Pestilence a with a wand of death, try to avoid him, all standard
operating procedure. Then he catches up with me at the outer door just
before the temple. My wand of death is empty. I've put on my other AoLS,
and doffed my shield of reflection so I can cast cure sickness. This of
course leads me around and around in circles: cure myself, get whacked,
cure again. I suppose I could have done it better, I'm much better at
evading Pestilence than fighting him, but finally I say the heck with it
and just whack the guy. My AoLS does its thing, I kill Pestilence and cure
myself again.

But I don't get very far before Pestilence revives. Worse, there's a black
dragon behind him, blasting a clear path for him. The dragon is no direct
threat, as I have disintegration resistance, but there's nothing to slow
Pestilence down.

It's a foot race, but I press on, knowing that the altar must be the one to
Tyr. Pestilence gets in a couple of whacks, and I have one foot in the
grave when I reach the altar. Perhaps one more turn and this YAAP would
have been a YASD.

But I get there in time, and Dangifino takes her place among the angels.

Hp [max]
5477692 Dangifino-Val-Hum-Fem-Law ascended to
demigoddess-hood. 472 [498]

Vanquished creatures:
Asmodeus
Baalzebub
Orcus
Yeenoghu
Juiblex
The Wizard of Yendor (14 times)
Death (twice)
Pestilence (twice)
Famine (5 times)
14 arch-liches
etc.

You never genocided any monsters.
You never polymorphed an object.
You used 4 wishes.
You did not wish for any artifacts.

The genocideless bit was not by choice -- I went the entire game without
even finding a scroll of genocide. The rest is pretty much SOP for me.

nice work. Do any of you regular ascendies have any tips on what
level/hp's/ac I should have for various sections of the dungeon? For
example, to start, I like to do a small section of the mines at level 3
until I hit about level 5, then I usually go to Sokoban, then finish
the mines. By that time I am usually level 11. then I head down to the
castle level, but what should my stats be like? any help would be
appreciated.

That looks reasonably close to what I do. Also work on your equipment and
resistances; you want to have magic cancellation of 3 (a property of
certain cloaks), magic resistance, and reflection. AC of maybe -10 to -15
is a bare minimum for the Castle, and perhaps you want better if you're
playing something like a Tourist. AC of -15 for me is barely ascendable if
I have lots of HP and potions of extra or full healing; I really like to
have -20 or better even for a combat wombat.

Ah, that's a *serious* potential disadvantage of conflict on Astral.
🙂 Who summoned the cockatrice?

Scary... Pestilence is pretty much the only threat on Astral, but he
makes enough of a pest of himself to compensate for the other two
wimps.

Congrats! You should've listed the final attributes for this one.
