For me, almost every class other than a pure combat-wombat
is a challenge due to my impatience or carelessness in the
early game. Whereas ie. barbarians just hack & slash through
the initial opposition, classes requiring more finesse
(and running away) should be played more carefully.
I've ascended a couple of "wimp" classes during the last
12 months and I've not bothered to write a yaap of them:
tourist (/WoW early game), priest (nothing spectacular
in the game), monk (still no weaponless conduct) et cetera...
and a couple of wizards (one more arch-lich wizard) who either
got SDSM or Magicbane rather early and boom: Astral Plane,
here I come.
Knights are still my favourite - early game *can* be a good
enough challenge for me, because initially knights are combat
wombats with some handicaps. (But: whoops! I got Excalibur!)
Well, I started another elf wizard. Found elven leather helm,
studded leather armor and low boots early on. Went to
Minetown, carrying about 10 daggers. I think I also had
"healing" spell. My large cat killed some watchmen, so I
got gloves and a small shield. I tamed a large dog. Then
I let my cat get too far away from me - the dog was with
me when I entered a general store.
A warhorse comes in and I start throwing daggers at it.
"You feel more confident in your skills." But before I could
do anything else, DYWYPI?
Great, I just didn't bother to check my hp or do anything
else smart.
Oh, and an elf ranger died a similiar death, after having
vanquished throngs of water moccasins and killer bees.
He had a big load of poisoned arrows... next time,
"keep your distance!"
