Good evening, it's time to upgrade my monitor. I'm currently using an ageing Dell ST2310F coupled with an ageing MSI R9 280 3GB.

I'm a casual gamer, but would like to explore some nicer games in 2k/4k. My GPU will obviously need upgrading so I'm waiting to see what comes about when the Vega GPU's are released. In the meantime I'd like a nicer display.

The rest of my spec's are fine, with just the screen and GPU needing upgraded.
CPU: 6700k
MB: Asus Z170I Pro Gaming
Ram: Ballistix Elite 16 GB Kit (8 GB x 2) DDR4 2666
PSU: EVGA Supernova 650 W Gs Gold 80+

I've narrowed the choice down to 3.

Samsung U28E590D (4k TN panel 28" 1ms) which I can't find any good deals on at the minute, not stocked by Amazon UK which is my preferred retailer £370

The similarly specced AOC U2879VF is available at Amazon UK and is a lot better price wise £290

Last but not least is the AOC Q2781PQ (27" IPS 2K 4ms) Not 4k, but will I ever need 4k? And a lovely design if you don't mind visible leads hanging down the back. Kind of ruins the look of the nicely designed stand. £315

See, I'm a casual everything, gamer, photographer, movie watcher, web browser.Like a jack of all trades but master of none. I didn't think that choosing a monitor was going to be so stresfull :)

Will the 4k be wasted apart from the odd 4k movie/video, will 2k be ample on a better quality IPS panel. But then will the response time of the IPS panel be an issue.

Will buying the 4k AOC U2879VF still look good running it at 2k rather than it's native 4?

My heads wrecked, any advice is much welcomed

Kind regards

4k is much better for casual gaming if you don't care about 144Hz that much.
Don't fall for all that gamer crap though, you're better off getting a good IPS 4k monitor like the Dell P2415Q that'll give you a better image and a higher quality panel.

I'd wait for the 1080ti if I were you, AMD isn't going to surpass Nvidia in the high end this generation, they're focusing on the mid range area with the exception of Vega which is probably going to rival the 1080.
Other option is to wait for a price drop.

Before getting a 4k monitor make sure your internet can handle 4k videos/movies. Just because of that reason I bought a 1080p instead of 1440p monitor because I watch things a lot but my internet can't handle anything more than 720p
