It's not actually even on the richter scale. The richter scale
saturates around magnitude 6, which makes in innacurate for quakes
above that magnitude. These days they use moment magnitude scale which
has no theoretical limit, though the largest physically possible given
the actual stresses rocks and earth can take would probably be
somewhere between 9.5 and 11.
It sounds as if the worst part of this quake were the enourmous
tsunamis generated; they killed over ten thousand in sri lanka and at
least 7000 in India, probably more than that. Being centered just
slightly offshore of Indonesia probably didn't prevent much land
damage, although a quake of this magnitude certainly could've killed
at least 5 to 10 times as many people if it had been centered on a
very large urban city center, such as tokyo or something.
