I can't get you 60fps with Oblivion. But If you want cheap, playable oblivion performance. Then this might work for you and would be upgradeable so long as AMD doesn't burn us again like I got burned on the 754 Socket...

Please don't flame me to hard, the guy I work with thought upgrading his ATI 9250 to an nvidia fx 5200 128bit/256MB mem would allow him to play oblivion... slide show only if that I am guessing.

He asked me what he would need, I did some research and this is what I came up with, minimum to have a decent chance of playability w/ oblivion.

This modest design was to rich for him... The prices are good as of 8/31 and are from newegg...

lol i agrie lol not to mention for a game that is not realy so great (just my opinion), and not even a game that is actualy next gen lol😉....or "next gen like"...like crysis lol, or the other ones i mentioned before lol, why arent there any posts"what hardware would run crysis?" lol...I gues the makers of crysis maka a game that will actualy play lol that is they have programmers that can actualy write optimized code lol  ....lol im so negative lol

hehe , btw i think oblivion programmers were thinking that their game is a game of tommorow (or next year literally lol), one buys the game in mid 2006(or whenever it came out), and is unable to get decent ftp's with all maxed out options till strong enough hardware is created ....lol and is mainstream atleast (pricewise) late 2007 early 2008.....this is just a bit funny, the hardware never really could keep up to software, but his time in this case this is just ridiculus. lol  .....hm...but ihope Crysis wont be such a power hog lol

Hi.
I guess games like project-offset require more power than Oblivion. The X1900XTX isn't good enough anymore. Actually projectoffset is what I was hoping Oblivion would be.,

i agrie, but i ment oblivion as a "product" in itselfe right out of the box, and in regards to the comparison with other games i also agrie...what can i say progress

actualy there is good news, the engin for it was designed from grounds up, there is a live in game demo on the net ( i think it was a G4 tv demo video),
and here are the specs that have been used in that pc:
-2g RAM running at 2-2-2-7 (2 sets of 1g dual channel)
-FX-60
-some Mboard (lol)
-7800 GT x2 (SLI)
-72gb raptor drives running Raid 1 (? always forget which raid is which)
they claim to have over clocked it, but knowing them probably not.

so all in all this system is not so bad, for a game that is infinitly beter visualy than oblivion(which units/characters looked comiclike), and po ...just real lol, whatever is on the video ( 20 something minutes of actual live ingame) looks amazing, and i guess all settings were set to a max there, so even a 1900xt/xtx would do the job well here, and a 6600 performs simillarly to the FX-60, if not a bit beter so i gues i will be able to play the game with just a new gpu upgrade 😀 ....atleast I hope so lol.

and besides project offset is being designed by gamers, for gamers(lol it all started out in one of the 3 guyz apartment), the guys that desin it im pritty shoor think about being able to have the game run on the even older hardware, and besides they also said that the hardware that they use, and the time when the game will be released will be midrange, and available to many people, so i guess i would expect the game to come out winter 2007 , althou eb games and other stores have the preorders for it , and state the release of it for 1/1/2007, which i highly doubt, the angine is great, and fast but not so fast , but i gues it might have changed 9they already got a publisher about 2 months ago), and so far i think the whole thing was done for about a year or 1.5 or so.

hm... and geting a dx10 card in a year or so when the price go a bit down will increade the visuals as well, lol the only thing is that my ram is a bit worse lol 5-5-5-12...is the difference great betwean that and a 2-2-2-7? in gaming?

All you need are Intel core 2 bla bla, Nvidia SLI motherboard and quad-Nvidia graphics. Don't bother with the 10,000Rpm hard drives, waste of your money. And Most important, A LARGE CASE FOR AIR FLOW YO!

Everyone keeps saying X1900XTXs, you know, X1950XTXs are out - 70GB/sec of vid memory bandwidth sounds pretty damn sexy (finally, gddr4).. then again. Cant find them on newegg, but found them at a few other sites (I'm in Canada though so I mostly use NCIX.com, they have them available on back-order, both standard and crossfire ed.)

Also, for 48 bucks you could throw in an Audigy4 OEM which has hardware sound processing. I bought one and it improved my framerate in FEAR by about 15% vs. onboard audio which loves to eat CPU cycles. You dont have to spend >100 bucks on X-FI or whatever to get the performance increase (and much better sound quality too) - would probably make a small increase in oblivion too given the sound FX and music that are constantly playing in the background.
Linky

If you go AM2, dont bother getting a CPU slower than 2.4GHz because anything slower than that really makes the memory bandwidth crap due to DDR2's higher latencies (higher cpu clock will help 'cancel out' the memory's high latency)
Read about it here.

the 1950xt/xtx is only 7% faster than the 1900xt/xtx series, and it costs more, there is no point in geting it if You are going to get a dx10 card soon, unles you want to burn some $$

thx 😀 , honestly that is the only game im waiting for so far lol (crysis looks nice but i just dont have the "must have" feeling for it  lol) , haze looks nice as well, elvion is just a bit to ...elvish for me lol😉, and po is just there amazing graphics, looks also that their mltiplayer modes will be outstanding, and way, way better than battlefield 2(if well look from a "tactical" team point of completing missions, and team play)

the game is not a mmorpg it will have a singleplayer, it is a fps set in a fantasy world, it will probably contain a litle bit of rpg in it but i would say not much something like battlefield 2142(you earn ranks, get new weapons and such, for magical characters you would probably gain new spells and such) the game is still debated upon wheather it will be liniar on non liniar, there is more detail on the forums check out my posts there( i think i titled it "new(er) po info) or somthing like it, it contained info about the units one can mount like dragons, trols, use balistas, catapults, and such, also i think i wrote about some new modes that the team came up with, like 3 mini in one mission mode, one side atacks the castle, other defends it but they can get mini misions, lets say during a battle part of the team goes to get couple balistas transported back to the castle, and they gave to defend them, from the monsters/ or the oposite team, if they succed they take the defence weapons back to the castle, and now they can use those defences to atack the atacking enemy, also going out for "help" to gain allies such as dragons to help out with the defences is sweet, there was one video of the blue troll atacking a dwarf, or elf, and on the left the another player flys by on a dragon, that looked amasing, it all looked as a prerendered cutscean not like it was a gameplay wideo, thats how good it was, also if im not mistaken a possible swich from 1person to 3rd perrson will be available, so so far the game loks amazing, and the feel from it is even better, just i hope none of the crapy developers gets its hands on it like Ea,which totally screwes up all games they take over, i think ubisoft would have done a nice work with it, but i think they are a bit too byzy with Haze at present(another title to check out), althou there is only 1 video online on it, but ign has about 10 screanshots of it. btw in regards to po i think there were 6 videos total , all are in the download section of projectoffset.com the g4tv video was one of the best if you want to see the full character minianimations, and get info about their new engine, which is sweet, also the shadows video is nice, also check out the obne which the player runs on top of an atacked wall, and the gragon flyies by, and he shoots down the guard or whatever....enjoy

lol i think we should have a next gen game list or something lol, or atleast a po all info thread lol, there was one more game that looks sweet, but i think its unfortunetly on ps3 it was assasins creed(like hitman but in the times of the crusades)
other games that look nice(pc) :
-Crysis (does it need any explanation?)
-Haze (like crysis but nicer  )
-Elveon (fighting, elves....lol, a bit of rpg i think)
-Anihilation kingdoms (the trailer looks awsome, but i think its a HoMM series  )
-Just cause (looks lika a ps or xbox game, quite nice)
-Sparta:Ancient wars (rts, looks awsome, like the rise and fall game))
-Team fortress 2 (fps, a bit cartoonish, but looks fun thou)
-Drakensang ( hm...similar to oblivion in graphixs department)
-Bio shock (fps)
-Battle for Atlantis (rts might be nice)
-Alan Wake (hm....drama/game)

ok im out of titles for now ...maby later something will come back to me lol...for now i think it will be sufficient lol....enjoy

This is getting off-topic.

I don't know why all of you are saying to download fraps to check FPS. You can type "TDT" in console and it will display it along with some other debug information.

And don't blame Oblivion's code because your computer can't handle the game on max settings. The game is demanding, yes, but it's not because the programmers don't know what they're doing. I know that they could have optimized it better for the PC, but really, it was in development for what, 5 years? Did you really want to wait even longer?

I play Oblivion with all settings on high at 800x600 with bloom and no AA with a few plug-ins to make the game look a little nicer. It runs at a solid FPS the entire time, and I'm using an X850XT. Personally, I think the game looks great even at 800x600.

I think you should be less concerned about what the actual FPS is and more concerned about how it looks and plays. You might think you need a constant 60FPS, but you'll realize that the game is perfectly playable as low as 30FPS.

Anyway, even if you have to turn down a few settings, I'm sure the game will still look great.

yes i agrie, the team mentioned that soon they will release new content, but that was about 2 or 3 weeks ago, so..... I guess we have to wait lol, but even comparing this game to other games which i mentioned this beats them all in the graphix department, i liked also the teapot creatures lol, and the dwarven animation(lol i guess he had a cold  lol )

sorry abou thte offtopic thing lol got carried away, lol im planing to set up my system maby this weekend, i finally might get the mobo on friday, (i found a pc store neer me that will have the mobo lol) , so i gues i might have a bit of fun aving the x850xt lol and i thought that the card is an oldie, lol, ...but i guess i will never play oblivion, i just dont like that game, i looked at some videos, and that 30 hour straight gameplay , lol (bailed out after an hour lol) and i just thought...crap in a nice (relatively nice) visual setting, (sorry oblivion lovers) its just not my game, hm... btw i havent played anything in the 800 resolution for a long time, dont the visuals look...boxy? i mean isnt it beter to play with more resolution but with a bit less eyecandy?....just curious?

Heh, I hadn't played any game with a resolution lower than 1024x768 in a long time either until Oblivion. I played it at 1024x768 for awhile, but I could feel a little bit of lag when there would be multiple enemies in the outdoor environments, so I decided to drop to 800x600, and the difference didn't bother me. I guess it just came down to personal preference when I had to choose between higher resolutions or something like maxed view distance.

I guess ur right then its all the mater of preference, i would also prefare a greater vew distance, i guess its easier then , one does not have to actually memorize whereon is at a certain point in the game (positionwise in regards to other places)

All the audigy 2s do except for the stupid Audigy2 SE OEM [note the Live! series is basically the same thing, and also relys heavily on the cpu - by heavily, i mean as much as onboard audio]

And by hardware processing i mean it has a DSP (digital sound processor) that does all the volumizing/mixing/3d positioning/EAX effects in hardware instead of doing audio processing with assistance from the CPU. Audigy4 OEM can mix 64 sound effects simultaneously in hardware in real time.

Here's a thought - you can do fine with a single 1900xt or xtx if you run 1600x1200 and turn-off anti-aliasing.

At lower resolutions I would want AA, but with my 20" monitor I really don't notice the difference except when speaking to characters at this resolution. I have turned it on and boy is there a performance hit.

My good Oblivion settings are x6400 overclocked to 2800mhz, 1900xt slightly overclocked to 650, 10mhz on RAM because it crashes if I push it any higher (probably need more voltage, have done it with ATI Tool but that prog is so unstable I can't be bothered) and 2 gigs RAM. HD is on, everything else is maxed. I hardly ever see the frame rate drop below 50...
