I recently built my first PC. I wanted a high end Photo editing machine with the option to do some gaming in the future.
Parts:
6700K
Gigabyte z170x gaming 7 motherboard
32GB crucial ballistix 2400mhz DDR4
(2) 1TB 850 EVO's
(1) 250GB 850 EVO
Borrowed an old graphics card for the time being. (gaming isn't something I can do at the moment)

Got everything hooked up and went to turn on. Got error code 55 (if I remember correctly) Did a little googling and everyone was saying that I needed 2133mhz DDR4 and then needed to do something with the BIOS. I went out and bought 16GB of 2133mhz to try it out. VOILA!!! It fired right up. But now I have $200 worth of pretty RAM that I really want to use and don't know what the heck I am doing. Someone please help a noob out. Thanks!

Solution
Your mobo can support 2400MHz RAM: Support for DDR4 3866(O.C)/3733(O.C)/3666(O.C) /3600(O.C.) /3466(O.C.) /3400(O.C.) /3333(O.C.) /3300(O.C.) /3200(O.C.) /3000(O.C.) /2800(O.C.) /2666(O.C.) /2400(O.C.) /2133 MHz memory modules

But your CPU can't: Memory types: DDR4-1866/2133, DDR3L-1333/1600 @ 1.35V

So, I would try to return the RAM to the store since the memory controller on the CPU it's not designed to support 2400MHz RAM.

Or you could try to overclock, but no guarantees. And you will notice any difference between 2133MHz and 2400MHz.

Solution
return the kit if you can.

the hyper X 2133 series overclocks quite decently, you shouldn't have any trouble OC-ing it to 2666mhz if that is your target. Although the benefits would be counted in seconds on a 20 min batch resize/post process, loss of hair might occur during the countless hours of stability tests.

Don't return it. I have the z170x gaming 7. The motherboard should automatically underclock it to 2133. Don't use the XMP profile and you should be fine. If that still doesn't work, then one of your sticks is dead. I had error code 55 too and it was because one of my sticks of ram was dead. My ram is default clocked at 2666.

Your board will support the higher frequency ram, you just have to enable the XMP profile in the bios under DRAM settings. If your comp wouldnt start even automatically underclocked its possible the memory you got were defective. Can you not return/exchange them?

If you enable the XMP profile you will have some issues sometimes with your ram so you might have to overclock your cpu too.

The Intel i7 6700K : Integrated Memory Controller: Supports 2 channels of DDR4-2133 and DDR3L-1600 memory with 2 DIMMs per channel. Support for memory based on the Intel® Extreme Memory Profile (Intel® XMP) specification. - Can be used up to 4133MHz DDR4 but highly doubt as it would be unstable and definitely need to Over Clock everything.
Might BottleNeck depending on what the person does. i7 6700K native or default setting geared towards memory would be 2133MHz. When your computer all set to go and have BIOS set up properly, then turn on XMP and should go
to xxxxMHz .

Sorry to revive this old thread but I just built a pc with the Z170x gaming-3 and have the same issue(5 long beeps, no post) with G.Skill DDR4-2400 2x8GB ram. I don't understand the reasoning behind the answer though. I know the CPU don't support the memory from the specs on the intel website but should't it just throttle the speed down to 2133MHz and allow the system to post until you activate Intel XMP in the bios? If not, then in the motherboard memory specs, DDR4-2400 OC, means it supports 2133MHz ram overclocked to 2400MHz not 2400MHz ram from factory?

That shouldn't be right I have the same kind of set up I have ddr4 2666 MHz ram 16 gb and my system runs fine. I have the same i7 6700k the only thing different is the motherboard which I will be installing next month.
