Greetings friends!

I'm having trouble getting my new gpu to work in my rig. Here's what I have:

asrock z68 extreme3 gen3 (BIOS 2.3)
8gb ram
i5-2400 cpu
cx600m psu

Up until now, I've been using the GTX 660ti without a hitch (and had a 450w psu at the time). I decided to upgrade my gpu and picked up a Gigabyte radeon r9 290 windforce (the one with the three fans). I bought the cx600m because I figured I'd need the extra power as well. I installed the gpu, got the 6 and 8 pin power cords hooked up, but for some reason, the new card doesn't show up in device manager and won't output when I use the HMDI or VGA ports. I tried downloading the AMD drivers, and got the catalyst software off their site. The installer loads, but doesn't seem to actually install any drivers, I'm thinking because the mobo doesn't recognize the card. There doesn't seem to be a way to bypass Catalyst either and install the drivers manually.

Long story short, I tried updated my BIOS for the first time thinking this might solve the issue...HORRIBLE idea. I didn't see the numerous posts about how updating the BIOS on the z68 kills sandy bridge processors. Couldn't boot to windows, just got an endless loop of the loading screen and then crashed and reset. Took me all night to figure out a solution, but reinstalling windows at least allowed me to get back in.

I feel like I've tried everything I found on forums - tried the gpu in the other PCI express slot, reset cmos, made sure the boot up is set to the PCI express slot, disabled the intel mobo graphics, tried other catalyst - nothing seems to work. I tried the card out in my buddy's rig and it gets recognized fine. Any ideas why this isn't working in mine??

Thanks so much for any help!

@quilciri I couldn't find that setting anywhere or anything that would let me change the generation. The only options I found are:

Primary Graphics Adapoter - set to PCI Express
VT-d - Disabled
Share Memory - Auto
IGPU Multi-Monitor - Enabled
Render Standby - Enabled

heres something I wonder about

'' while full-height cards may increase their power after configuration. They can use up to 75 W (3.3 V × 3 A + 12 V × 5.5 A), though the specification demands that the higher-power configuration be used for graphics cards only''

so I wonder if this is bios activated in some way and the card want to go to 75w but the whatever of the board don't let it ???

look under power

looking at this forum thread it seems this is a known issue before ??? with uefi on the older boards like yours ??? 2ed or 3eed post down
''Thx for the effort. Sadly it does not work with my Asrock Z68 Extreme 3 Gen 3 with bios L2.31A''

just seems like if it works your good if not your screwed

Based on this situation and my projections, probably nippular hemorraghing, uncontrollable bowel syndrome, and mild death.

I guess these manufactures don't get together on anything or just don't care as in if it don't work too bad so sad better luck next time or why are you still running that thing we got the new stuff to buy and it ''may'' work on it ??

like in the post I gave above on your bios it says '' Improve discrete VGA card vBIOS compatibility ''

so now it looks like if they decide that they don't want to support hardware they don't see fit or not getting there cut of some cash or it not there brand they can prevent you from using any hardware that they feel they don't want you to .. so whats next ?? you buy a MSI board and if you don't use a MSI brand part for it will not post until you do ??? or evga and sapphire don't pay them a fee there cards don't get any board support for there products to work on them ???

I'm getting the same issue.
I have an the following system.
Asrock Z68 Extreme4 - 2.21a bios (latest)
i5-2500K - 4.5ghz (tried on stock speed as well)
16Gb G.SKILL Ripjaws Series
Antec CP-1000 (1000 Watt PSU)
Sapphire 290x Tri-X 8Gb

Seems this motherboard chipset just doesn't support UEFI GPU's despite the latest bios saying it does.
The iGPU works fine. The 2xGTX 570 SLI setup I'm upgrading from works fine.
