A few weeks ago I built a new system: I5 4690k, z97 pro gamer mb, evga 850 psu. I re-used my haf x case, 16gb of corsair DDR3 1600 (2 8gb sticks), my crucial 500gb ssd, my wd hard drive., and my video card. I also bought a new copy of windows 10 64 bit.
When I first booted up, the system wouldn't post, the DRAM led on the mb would blink and it would re-try the memory test. I finally pulled out one memory stick and the system posted immediately. I completed installing the OS and the Asus driver and software, everything worked fine. Of course, I only had 8 gigs of ram.
I tried installing the 2nd memory stick, tried both of them in different sockets on the mb, nothing worked. I called Asus tech support, went over it with them, Even though both memory sticks worked fine in my previous mb, just 48 hours before, The Asus tech decided it must be a bad memory stick. I agreed, what else could it be?, I figured maybe I zapped it with static electricity or something.
A couple of weeks go by, and I order a 16gb kit from Newegg, 2 sticks, Corsair DDR3 1866mhz. Same problem, one stick is all the mb would work with. Asus tech support told me to return the motherboard to Newegg.
Newegg was pretty good about it, sent me out a new mb in 3 days, swapped out the old mb. I decided to go for broke and installed BOTH 16gb kits. Of course there was nothing wrong with the first 16gb memory kit, so now I have 32 gb of ram, running at 1600mhz.
I use my computer to surf the net, play games, do some photo editing with lightroom. I never had any problems with just 16gb of ram. Does anyone know what I would possibly need 32 gigs of ram for? I'm not happy that a defective mb from Asus cost me $100 in ram I really don't think I need......
