the main meaningful difference between those two models will be the cooling solution (which you can search reviews for) and the overclock frequency. the long numbers after the 980 are simply the model/series from that particular company, and the 04G/4GD5 indicates that it has 4GB of VRAM...

you should not use a molex to 8pin adapter to power your GPU. If your PSU doesn't come with the proper connections for your GPU by default, that's a strong indication that it is an inappropriate PSU for your GPU.

you would be better off calling Lenovo, their product might have malfunctioned and since it's only been a month, it should still be under warranty.

I wasn't aware that any motherboard existed that could support BOTH DDR2 and DDR3.

the safest route is to install the drivers using the included driver disc which comes with every motherboard.
