the 290x fully loaded uses about 400w, and it wasn't loaded when it went pop. However, since you swapped out the motherboard and then tried on-board graphics the logical conclusion is the power supply was what was a smoking and popping.

Have you tried any other game/s, assuming the other game you mentioned trying was Arma 3 offline? Apart from what others have mentioned select auto select in Arma 3 settings. When viewing distance is set to great Arma 3 turns into a slide show for me also.

to nicola, yes. the only times (3or 4) i've ever seen with this problem is a damaged 1150 socket or earlier cpu's with pins damaged.

well that's the strangest ever!! the cm hyper 212 should be fine. the only difference possibly is the fan connector to mobo, which should make no difference at all to the mobo. mounting the 212 should be no different to stock if it is designed for 1150 socket.

230t can fit a 280mm radiator in top panel and has option for 2x 120mm or 140mm fans, so an h60 is an option for top panel. Don't know about Versa 2. I would prefer the 230t regardless.

The top is always hotter than the one underneath(heat rises). More so with non-reference coolers. Blower type (usually ref) send most of the heat out of the rear of case. To answer question, no rest easy, your good to go as is.
