Friends' graphics card just came in the mail tonight. So they added it to the motherboard that they had setup, the motherboard was working fine, and it popped then started smoking when it was turned on. They had a 2nd identical new motherboard sitting there so they got the second one set up. This one now will not boot up at all, after removing the graphics card and connecting to the mother boards video out it will not boot up either.
Is it possible that the graphics card is faulty and fried the motherboards, or what could be the problem..?

Any help would be great, as I have no idea what their problem could be other than faulty gfx card...

Try Changing PSU. Sounds like you installed under rated PSU for graphic card. Can you tell me model of graphic card and model of PSU? I will look into it and will try to solve. Do let me know specifications.

For using crossfireX technology, you need at least 1000 watt power supply. Try changing power supply. Minimum requirement is 750 watt. But it seems like your gpu is taking more power. Also your configuration is sucking more power. Upgrading your PSU might help you. Let me know. :)

the 290x fully loaded uses about 400w, and it wasn't loaded when it went pop. However, since you swapped out the motherboard and then tried on-board graphics the logical conclusion is the power supply was what was a smoking and popping.

Whenever something starts smoking and popping it's always a bad power supply and a build like that is going to need a bigger power supply anyway or it won't be able to power it and probably damaged components.. Try removing motherboard battery and see if the onboard graphics will work or if you don't have an onboard graphics try a much lower power hungry Graphics card if you have one laying around... And I would also suggest trying a different power supply just to make sure your motherboard still works without a graphics card.

They tried two different 750w gold PSUs, both the PSUs and onboard gfx worked before the 280x was installed. Also had them check the motherboard afterwards with the onboard graphics, and it wasn't doing anything at all.. 🙁
