thank you to everyone who was helping me out. Uninstalling the current drivers followed by a reboot worked and I am now connected to the internet via ethernet cable. I really appreaciate all of you and this site!! thanks again

What would happen if I uninstalled the drivers for the unknown device? aka the ethernet cable

I did that and it says that it found the driver software for my device, but there was an error while trying to install it. Also says " This operation returned because the timeout period expired." and the driver was for the ethernet connection.

That didn't work since I already have a wifi usb adapter. It just took me to google.
