A friend of mine was joining two partitions with partition magic and the computer crashed in the middle and none of the data is accessible. Are there any good utilities out there that might be able to recover the data?

Girder works well. I got it when it was free, but it's not anymore. You can probably find some other free ones at that first site.
You can also map one drive to a directory on another. Like C:\stuff could be the second drive. Control panel -> adminitrative tools -> computer management is where you would find it I believe.
Try going to the control panel and then to power options and to the advanced tab. Look at the drop down that menu that says "When I press the power button on my computer:"
