Price of PIII 800, 128MB RAM, 28GB HDD?

Next time someone you know wants a computer with those kind of specs, just walk down an alley in front of a garbage truck and take home the machines set out for them by people hoping to not pay the recycling fees. As others here have said, I give away better computers than that - the last one I...

x1950 Pro AGP crashes and other unstable behavior

My 1950 pro works fine - no problems at all, other than I hate the "Catalyst Control Center" and don't install it. Are you sure you're installing your AGP driver and DirectX?

Countdown to Windows Vista: The THG Rundown

I wonder if Tom's will devote some time to a hands-on with Ubuntu Linux, which is free, stable and powerful as well - and considering China's decision to go Linux, may end up with as large a user base. I'm thinking that for anyone but an all-out gamer, it's a viable option.

The Intel Bias In the Forum

Well said. Price/performance talks the loudest here, usually. Only the occassional troll skews things, mostly it's reasonably balanced, but a good troll fight is good for the blood once in a while - we'd probably never see Jumping Jack if he didn't have a crusade to keep him coming back.

Does CPU magazine still have "The Mad Modder" dude? He was a good read.

Wood case is complete! UPDATED: More pictures added!

That's a fine case you have there. Damn, I shoulda built it. I was doing some renovations and am thinking about building a low power unit into an interior wall and have an LCD as a picture frame. If I find a decent monitor with USB ports cheap I may do it yet. Did you have to run ground...

    cleaning the heatsink/fan

I guess I coulda learned something like that if I'd gone to borrow your isopropyl instead of the guy's in the funky room. But I probably never would've experienced Bob Marley, man. Jah guide.

    cleaning the heatsink/fan

Good idea. Just learned somethin' new. Don't know about dorm rooms there, but no-one has isopropyl? Find the room that smells like dope and ask there.

    Toms Hardware

Please don't be a kiss ass - there's few things in the world more annoying, and I'd rather not have to change my favourable impression of you. One possible solution would be to get some "Pink Floyd - The Wall" stickers with the marching hammers and write "Tom's Hardware" in with the...

    cleaning the heatsink/fan

I don't think hydrogen peroxide is a solvent for thermal paste. 99% isopropyl should cost you a dollar. No reason to use anything else. Don't use regular rubbing alcohol, which is cut with water - it has to be 99% isopropyl.

ASUS A8n-E chipset voltage mod some pictures

I picked up an ASUS A8N-E thinking I would replace a Biostar 6100-M9 integrated microATX board, but took it back out because it doesn't overclock worth crap. The Biostar will run my opteron 170 at 2.7 GHz at stock voltage (1.3V) and the chipset is passively cooled, never even gets warm. The...

Reboot and select proper boot device... error

Do you have the jumper on the back of your optical drive in the right place - ie: master, not cable select? I picked up an ASUS mobo lately that had a warning to hook up the optical drive to the secondary IDE slot only. Can't think of anything else at the moment, other than try a different...

    All Hail the X850XTPE!

Lol! I've even got an old PCI S3 Virge around for testing / emergencies - you can follow the traces and see how it works, almost watch the pixels ooze through. I don't think you'd call it a pixel pipeline, more like a garden hose. It's so slow it'd probably cool a x850XT if I could figure how...

What the!? Why no good overclocking micro atx for core 2?

My only complaint is the one I had before - the darn BIOS. I'm still trying to find what program to use to write my own or modify a full size ATX overclocking BIOS to work with alot more micro ATX mobos. I actually have a microATX board in my Antec 4U server rack case as it overclocks better...

How do I connect sound to speaker system?

Tom's has had a couple articles showing that good computer speakers kick $1000 home theater setups collective a**es. Can't compete with an adapter cable for the money though, but still makes one appreciate the quality / price ratio for good Logitech or Creative surround sets.
