Where to get linux cd's

It's probably not as limited as your think. The personal 9.1 version has probably got 90% of the desktop apps you'll want. If you need the extra stuff, I'd imagine that you can add the developer and server packages from the SuSE FTP site easily enough. OTOH, $89.95 for the professional version...

    I LOVE LINUX!

I have to disagree with that. I don't believe it's a Linux philosphy to design a hard to use OS. It's just that until recently, there's not been a need to make it really easy. To be blunt, there's nothing hard about editing a text file - once you know what you have to change or add - so that's...

    TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-1902B Problem

Most CDROM drives just use the ATAPI driver. It shouldn't be a big problem. What kind of laptop is it? Knock Knock, Neo

    Knopix

Well, what did it actually do? Any errors or anything? Did you burn it as a disk image rather than a filesystem? eg, when you put it in your PC and open the CD, does it show a bunch of files, or does it show 1 file named <whatever>.iso? Knock Knock, Neo

    Suggestions on a Distro?

Mate, I don't think the distro really matter here. The key is easy configuration of the Bind nameserver, so the config tool is probably more important than the distro. If it's multi-use + nameserving, then sure go with Mepis. But if it's dedicated, maybe something minimal like Debian or OpenBSD...

    Mandrake Desktop

On 9.2 it's in the Control Center, then Hardware, then Screen Resolution. It looks like it's set larger than your physical display is capable of. It might have changed slightly in 10, but should be similar. Failing that, you can edit /etc/X11/XF86Config (or XF86Config-4 ?) so that it's the right...

    I LOVE LINUX!

I dunno... I got Solaris x86 8 a while back, and it was rock solid once you get it installed (and get the DMA disk access going). It was pretty slow compared to Linux, IMO, but I didn't have even one lockup or crash or anything. Thought hard about putting it on the server, but the support costs...

The Holy Grail (subject to lawsuits)

Hmm. There's already a few options along those lines, but yeh, if it's a clean room implementation it should be a good thing for folks looking for a new OS. Hopefully neither the WINE guys nor MicroSoft have been ripped off. More info here: <A...

    Linux/Windows + Multiboot + Raid 1

Short answer is yes, you can do that. Mirrored disks are pretty easy to work with. The only potential problem is that that you need the boot loader to jump to 51GB, which may or may not work... I think the grub boot loader may handle that better than lilo. Hopefully the installer will load the...

Or use Cygwin with XFree86? Or maybe easier to use VNC. Knock Knock, Neo

Linux Article - No "tear articles apart" section?

"RPM hell" isn't even a problem with most RPM based distributions anymore. Mandrake's got urpmi to manage that. SuSE uses YAST (or YOU) and there's also apt-get for RPM. And FWIW, even .deb based systems can have problems if the package repository is badly put together. Back in the real world...

    I LOVE LINUX!

I reckon Linux is fine for grandma (who wouldn't be setting her machine up anyway), but it's the gamers and midrange Windows used and similar who it's not ready for yet. Folks who like to click lots of installers and run the bleeding edge drivers and games, and who need the system to be...

    mandrake 10 and ati

Right. That's the binary (compiled) package. The one you want is probably called kernel-source-2.6.3.4mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm. If you are having trouble finding it, launch RpmDrake through the Mandrake Control Center. It has a search feature in it. If looking for "kernel-source" doesn't find...

    mandrake 10 and ati

You probably need to install the kernel headers or kernel source package. It's trying to build the ATI module, but it can't without knowing how your kernel was built. These lines give it away: kernel includes at /usr/src/linux/include not found or incomplete file...

    I LOVE LINUX!

Man, I hate nano. Give me vi any day ;-) FWIW, I tend to use gEdit for my non-hacking notepad needs. Seeing as how I like to click the icons and everything. :-) Knock Knock, Neo
