A 1070 is enough if you're willing to turn down a few settings from ULTRA to MEDIUM(+)
Main difference:
G-Sync is a hardware module inside the screen and has a range from 30-165Hz
Freesync is not a hardware module inside the screen. Latency is a tiny bit worse (basically unnoticeable) but the range is limited. There's not a continuous freesync range from 30-144Hz and the standard is a bit messy. With G-Sync you always know what you're buying with freesync you gotta look at the specs in details. A 144Hz freesync screen can sometimes have a freesync range between only 68-96Hz.
Also: G-Sync is only supported by NVIDIA while Freesync is an open standard which NVIDIA doesn't support though.
Both technologies tie framerate to the output of your GPU. That eliminates tearing and lags due to FPS drops.
I see thanks for the reply... Any monitors you recommend then? I think if im going to go for such a beauty... imma just get a 1080 then...
it largely depends on your planned upgrade-cycle and the committment you're willing to make.
the XB271HU is a superb monitor. but you know...it costs a fortune
it depends on when/what you're looking to upgrade.
I personally use a screen for ~10years. if you're the same, I suggest you get a good one, even though your current GPU might not be able to push the needed frames right now fully, since the next generation of cards will if history is any indication (gotta remember that the 1060 is as powerful as a 980, so I reckon a 1160 will be as powerful as a 1080).
getting a 1080p screen in 2017 is kind of a waste of money imo. yeah it's cheaper right now but cost more in the long run and you're better off using your old or buying a used one for the time being if you really need one.
if you're looking at a quick upgrade cycle, or an extensive GPU-upgrade cycle, planning on using the 1070 for 5 years+, then a 1080p screen is of course a nice thing to have and is attractive to spend money on.
However for a 1080p screen, I wouldn't go with adaptive sync rather with an IPS, maybe ultrawide.
