So I do understand that 1440p would be more visually appealing, but here is my question!

Would playing 1080p on ultra settings look better than playing 1440p on (medium-high)-high settings?

For example, I have a evga ssc GTX 970 and I decide to play BF4. I have two options, play max settings on the 1080p, or lower some settings and play on 1440p only because it still looks better. ***(If I am suffering performance loss)

With your thoughts and experiences, it will help me decide whether to purchase a 1440p capable monitor, or stick with the 1080p option.

Also since I am a complete noob when it comes to these newer monitors...does a 1440p monitor also give the option to play under the 1900x1080 resolution? ( unsure if it is a 16:10 aspect ratio) If so that would be nice.

Even if my GPU can not handle all games at max settings under 1440p, I will make use of it by replaying some older games.

THANK you for you time and responses!

Solution
I recently got a 1440p screen and it is lovely, things look really nice and often all I need to do to get the same FPS as on my 1080p screen is turn the AA right down or off without touching any other settings. I find at that resolution I barely notice the lack of AA and it is well worth it for how 'crisp' everything else feels at that resolution.

I was caught out a bit an am having to upgrade my computer to run the latest games coming out, it does have quite a big impact if your graphics card is already working hard to get high detail at 1080p. I personally find the higher res is much much more noticeable and satisfying than what I consider the very marginal increase in quality from High/VeryHigh to Ultra.

If you are going to lower...

If you are going to lower your resolution, a good screen should scale down to 720p (half of 1440p) much better than 1080p which will tend to look much blurrier. However dropping from 1440p to 720p will look horrendous to you once you have got used to 1440p 😉.

I say it is worth the investment. If budget is a concern you should look into getting a Korean refurbished factory second, there is a bigger chance it could be faulty of course. I got mine off Ebay for almost a 1/4 of the price of an original, apparently it *might* have up to 6 pixels not working. I have tried finding them amongst 3,686,400 pixels on screen but have yet to have any luck 😀.

Solution
Well thank you all for your input.

I think I may just end up getting a 24in gysnc monitor for 1080p, although I could downscale the resolution on the 1440p. I rather play in the native resolution. For me, I feel better playing everything on max settings. Many people like to agree that you will not notice AA on 1440p or higher, but if you are able to run it, it does have a good impact. For pixel density, I do not believe the small % sharpness is worth overall game performance/experience with my current set up. Maybe if I had a 980ti I would be very comfortable under 1440p.
