Im getting a new pc and i have a 8600 gts in spare...so feel like waiting till june for supposed new nvidia video cards and ati pricedrops and get a new one. And core i5 will last for 5+ years.

Will i be good with a 8600 gts overclocked to play on 1680 x 1050?

For source games, sure. But if you want higher details on other games, you'll need a better card.

8600GTS would be on the lower scale of ok for that resolution. I wouldn't use less than an ATI 4770 or 9800gt, but would probably look at 4870/5770/GTX260.

It should hold you off long enough till nvidia brings out there GT300 series cards.

The game i play most is modern warfare and most probably in december will be modern warfare 2.

Used to have a 260 gtx card and most games except arma and those cpu intensive were a bit laggy. Never used best settings.

Also in the past used a 9600 gt and the graphics on games like jericho and devil may cry 4 were sick...maybe its good to get a 9600gt for around $80 and use this 8600 gts for physx.

For a 260 to be outperformed by an 8600gt points to something seriously afoot in your rig, probably PSU related (considering that the 260 uses for more juice than an 8600gt) or perhaps a severe CPU limitation.

Was using the 260gtx along with core 2 duo e8400 and 700 watts PSU.

When i had the 9600 gtx it was with core 2 duo e8400 and 350 watts PSU

Ok, just tried every game on 1280 x 1024 and got 100fps+ on games like left 4 dead, call of duty 4, street fighter 4, resident evil 5. All settings on high with no AA. Did it with a 260 gtx.

Heck, even some games i liked more the 1280 x 1024.

nice suggestion but check newegg , seems like hd4000 series has moved higher in prices

yup, cheapest one goes for $120 and then jumps to $144.

But if i decide to play on 1280 x 1024 with a 8600 gts superclocked, is it enough?

It should perform just fine at that resolution. You could probably see higher FPS with more sparkle on a newer card, but you should be able to play most titles pretty comfortably at that resolution.

yes it could be psu or connector related as happened with me , strange fps problems disappeared when i changed the molex power connector on my 6600 .
