Just bought a 23" monitor (Samsung SM2333HD) with a native 1920x1080 resolution, but I cannot get this to work properly with Intel 915GM or ATI Radeon using analogue.

It works OK over digital/DVI but I need analogue as I use an analogue KVM with it. There's nothing in the brochures to say it won't work and it only comes with an analogue D-sub cable in the box.

In each case there was a 3" black margin down the left of the screen, even when directly connected bypassing the KVM. 1600x1200,1920x1200 etc rescale correctly to fit (but look naff), but I discovered that the native 1920x1080 just won't work over analogue no matter what I do. I've also tried 'PStrip' and changing modelines etc etc to no avail.

Now sending monitor back as it should 'just work' without faffing around...

But any thoughts, anyone??

That doesn't really fix the problem and would involve shelling out more money. And besides, a laptop and some older computers don't even support DVI, but do support 1920x1080 analogue.

I've not heard that before. It sounds plausable but is unreasonable for a monitor if it doesn't say that anywhere in its literature.

If you're right that it is a digital only resolution then what was Samsung thinking when they put an analogue cable in the box with a monitor that's 1920x1080?? I've put my old CRT back in and that will display 1920x1080 but squashed into a 17" screen so doesn't look good but proves the card can drive that mode.

So I'm not sure you're right in saying that it's digital only,- I'd like to see some more proof, but I thank you for your advice ;) .

ok here is another way of putting it. When you hook up the dvi cable you get 1920x1080, when you hook up the 15 pin analog cable you can't get that resolustion. So guess what that means. The 15 pin analog cable does not pass a digital signal thru it, which means the monitor is only going to see to put up analog resolutions. It just so happens that 1920x1080 is not a analog resolution, it is a digital resolution which requires a digital signal to activate.

my friend had a similar problem. he bought a brand new 26" 1920x1080 lcd monitor and it wouldent output the 1080p resolution over vga cables (he also mentiond something about black margins on the screen). when he switched to dvi cables the problem went away.

Sorry, but you're all wrong!!

I swapped the Samsung for an Iiyama 24" 1920x1080 and it works fine with all those same computers over analogue at that resolution. Adding a good quality analogue cable into the setup makes the difference between digital and analogue at that resolution hardly noticable. Even the old analogue Compaq KVM works fine passing through that 1920x1080 signal. So now I have 3 computers driving the screen thru' a KVM at 1920x1080 over analogue and the picture is near perfect. I agree that digital may be a little better, but this is very good indeed. I conclude that the Samsung monitor had some 'issues'..
