1xNTFS and 1xFAT32

If I change my C: to NTFS, can I still use D: as a FAT32 from my other computer? I use a drive to transport files back and forth (pull out tray), so don't want to change to NTFS if after I can't read and write (from/to) a FAT32 second drive.

Need a little more detail, what OS's of the 2 pc's etc. Your using D as a removable drive?

If you are using Win2K or WinXP, you'll be able to read and write to any partition, regardless of the file system. These operating systems support both NTFS and FAT32.

The difficulty arises if you format a partition as NTFS, and attempt to access that partition from within an older operating system, such as Win95/98/ME. These operating systems do not support NTFS (without some kind of third-party software ... and it's usually not cheap) and the NTFS partitions will not be visible.

DOS will misidentify a NTFS-formatted partition as HPFS.

So in a nutshell ... it all depends on which operating system you intend to use.

One use WXP, the other now running W2K (testing the waters with XP and 2K to see which one to move when 98se becomes too old to keep), the third running 98se. I want to be able to move a removable drive (FAT32) between those systems. Each system got it's own hard drive, but the removable drive I want to keep it "chunky32". Logic say it should be okay, but better ask first and save some cursing. LOL

Yea all those can read FAT 32, should be just fine if you make your xp or 2k hard drives NTFS.

hmm...i have been reading about this...and still dont have a straigh answer.
if i format in ntfs, will the computers on my network, who use win98se, be able to access the ntfs partitions through the network.
i mean, i really think it would be able to, but i have not been able to find a definate answer.

HonestJhon, Windows 98se can not read NTFS unless you dig deep into your pocket for third party software.

Yes, other non-NT computers will be able to read the NTFS hard drive through the network. I've been doing that for over a year with Win2K and now I'm doing it with Win2K on one machine, WinXP on another and Win98SE on another.
