I seem to have 2 things happening that don't seem normal and may have
started with SP2.

The first is that even though a folder is noted for "Documents" it will come
up in Filmstrip view, which gets very irritating. I went back to folder
options in Control panel and clicked "Reset All Folders" and they changed
back. The customize selection still shows "Documents", but the Filmstrip
doesn't come up, which is the way I want it. Did SP2 over ride all these
settings?

Secondly, it seems that I have a lot of "Read Only" attributes on most of my
folders and files. This also seems to come from SP2 since I did not set
these folders this way, and I am an administrator. Possibly this was added
with the Security center, is there a way to reset all my folders to remove
the "Read Only" designation? Some of the folders are set as "Allow network
users to change" but still show as "Read Only".

Thanks,
Clark

The question makes no sense---maybe you should try again.

Read Only is the default state for folders from the beginning. You can't
read from or write to a folder. The attribute being set to read only has no
effect on the folder contents.

Well, OK, Filmstrips are only supposed to be available in folders that are
designated as pictures or albums. I was showing filmstrips in a "Documents"
designated folder. It seems to me a setting was hiding somewhere that over
rode the designation on the folder. After I reset all folders, it went
away.

As far as the "Read Only", if you look, all folders (at least most) will
have a green square in the Read Only box. If you click once, it goes away,
and it you click twice a check mark appears. I found an article that says
Widows basically ignores the Read only for folders, but if you put a check
mark and choose all subfolders and files, the files in the folder will be
marked as read only. It is just a little confusing always having the read
only box marked. I also used the attrib +r to change a folder to read only
but the properties window did not change, still the same green square.

Hi Clark,

For the 1st part:

Sometimes, the folder-type value in the registry corrupted and you may see irrelevant Common Tasks for a folder. Examples:
Picture tasks for a Documents folder
Film Strim option for Documents folder etc..

See: Common Tasks Don't Match Folder Type:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_common_tasks.htm

This applies to both the above scenarios. When you reset all folders, the folder view settings, the template, the Bag values get reset - thus solving the problem.

How can it be confusing if whether the attribute is set or not makes no
difference whatsoever? Ignore it.
