With XFX797A TDBC in Crossfire the reviews are touting the high frame rate in the 2560 resolution. Searching the 27" market have really only found two suitable monitors; Dell Ultrasharp 2711 and the Samsung Syncmaster 27A850D. Do any of you own one of these? Is the image at this resolution substantially better than 1920X1200 in DX11 gaming applications?

I use an HP ZR30w, which is a competitor (and uses the same panel) as the Dell U3011 2560x1600 (basically it's a 16x10 screen instead of the 16x9 screen you're looking at). The quality is a lot better and you WILL be impressed by how good things look (not only is the resolution higher but these higher end monitors tend to have better image quality than the average 20-24" screen).

At the same time I must warn you that it's an expensive path to go down. Not only is the monitor very expensive, you will need a lot more gpu horsepower to keep framerates at high levels at the greater res (1920x1080=about 2 million pixels to push; 2560x1440= about 3.7 million pixels to push)! Given all of the above, I strongly prefer a large, high res single monitor to multi-monitor.

I have a question for you beltzy, maybe it helps USAdystopia:
Do you have problems with the "size" of the letters using that resolution? I asked because i also have a 1920x1200 monitor and in some games i cant see anything.
I dont like lowering the resolution.

^^^

Probably not a good monitor for you. The higher the resolution the higher the pixel density and the smaller the pixel size will be. The higher the pixel density the smaller text will be.

If reading text on your current 1920x1200 monitor is difficult, then you are better off buying a larger size monitor with the same resolution. That way the pixel density is lower and pixel size is larger. If you already have a 27" 1920x1200 resolution monitor, then you have the largest monitor for that resolution.

I've not heard of that issue before. I have never had an issue with font size or not being able to read text. Could you provide some more information? What games and what kind of letters are you referring to? What size is your current monitor? 1920x1200 is a pretty standard resolution (though 1920x1080 seems to be the norm these days) so I'm curious why you're having trouble.

Game designers support these higher resolutions and text should be easily readible unless there's something odd going on.

Im using a 24" LG 1920 x 1200 monitor, and for example im playing (trying to play) Crusader Kings II and the font size is very small.
In games like Skyrim you dont have that problem (at least not all the time) because the character is big and you are looking at houses, roads and so on.
So what im saying is, 2560x1600 is even more resolution, so smaller font size.
That was my question or comment.

If you are already having problems with DPI on a 24" 1920x1200 display I would recommend going for a 30" 2560x1600 over a 27" 2560x1400. The pixels per inch will still be higher but not by that much. Alternately 2 more 24" 1920x1200 displays for Eyefinity may be your best route. If you are unfamiliar with Eyefinity look it up on youtube.

Im not the one asking the question, just in case theres a confusion.

I was just commenting about issues that i have that maybe would help him make a decision.
He didnt say what GPU he has, but if he can run at high settings in his current monitor he probably can handle Eyefinity (maybe not max settings).

@USAdystopia : bottom line is I think just about everyone you talk to who uses one of these larger, very high-end monitors loves them.

@Lord Captivus : it sounds like a specific issue with a specific game. I wouldn't let that deter you from upgrading unless that one game is massively important to you. In Reckoning: Kingdoms of Amalur, there is an issue with the quest log at 2560x1600 so I've been playing that one game at 1920x1200 on my ZR30w but it's an isolated issue and i expect it to be resolved via patch sometime soon.

I had the resolution problem with many games, i remember that problem also with Never Win.. Nights. I HATE THAT PROBLEM!

But like you said, its only a small issue.
I would love to have a 2560 monitor, like you said, everybody who has it, loves it.

I am using two 2560 x 1600 samsung monitors.
Initially, I had a problem with the text size on web pages. But, The zoom capabilities of browsers these days makes it mostly a non issue. The higher pixel density keeps the letters clear regardless.

The games I play, which are mostly strategy games all have a zoom capability. I don't seem to have a problem with text size.
One benefit of a higher resolution is that you can see more of the map without scrolling.
You can always lower your game specs to a lower resolution, but you can'r raise them if your monitor is not capable.

One of the benefits of these expensive monitors is a wider viewing angle. Normal 1080P will be 170/160. higher resolution brings better panels with 178/178.
That means that your head position need not be fixed to get good color and sharpness.

As I understand it there are 3 good 2560x1440 monitors at 27". From the reviews, they seem to rank as such in terms of looks and features:

1) Dell Ultrasharp U2711
2) HP ZR2740W
3) Samsung S27A850D

Personally I wouldn't even consider the Samsung. I'd get the HP unless the Dell was on sale (I've seen it at the $700 mark).

Having 2 XFX797A TDBC not interested in Eyefinity setup...just a larger higher resolution monitor. Will probably go with either the Dell or HP unless someone has any other suggestions...
