I know these are close knit cards

my question is which one would each of you choose and why? i dont really want biased inputs(nvidia fanboys or ati fanboys)

ive done some research and they both are pretty equal so what

OH and heres something yall might want to know

Asus P5Q(no crossfire options)
Pentium Dual COre @ 2.2(soon to be core 2 duo E8400)
3 GB Ram @ 667(soon to be 4 GB @ 800)

thank you for your input

it's really down to the games you play and whether or not you care about HD content viewing. The gtx260 is better in crysis and a couple other games while the 4870 1GB is slightly better in others. but really the differences are small. also the 4870 is better at dealing with HD movies and the like, if that's of any importance to you. and if that's not a deal- decider, just go with whichever is cheaper. you won't be disappointed either way.

So you need the raw performance of that card or another? four-nine-sevel-eleven is not a good thing to consider at first!

Really it depends on the game you play and on the engine beeing used in that particular game. But overall, hd4870 is slightly better than 260gtx+ and I also heard it does better at dealing with video editing and hd stuff.

if you want a comparison according to the numeric theory - here u go

Hd 4870 = 4+8+7+0 = 19
gtx260 = 2+6+ "turbo X" which is also calculated as 10-11 = 8+ 10-11 = 18-19

Here u go power index 19 for Hd 4870 and power index 18-19 for Gtx260. As I said, they are pretty much the same in performance and their performance depends on games but overall, Hd4870 is a liiitle bit better.

Best Regards
Christopher.

I provided him with power index for both of these cards. Now he can compare and choose nwhich one to buy.

thanks to the ppl that are actually answering my question with a real answer XD

i was thinking about the IceQ4 4870...then i decided against it because in one game(i think it was GTA 4 but plz dont quote me on that) it got outperformed by the 9800GTX+

so i think im sticking with nvidia

o and that power index...didnt really help with my question :D :D :D

I've personally used the Radeon 4870 1GB and love it. Worth every penny:

For about the same price after mail-in rebate however, you can get the GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 896MB Superclocked Edition:

You're going to be very happy with either, honestly. At that price, the GTX 260 C216 SE is hard to pass up, but I can't attest to it's performance personally as I'm a 4870 user. :)

Not to sound Biased or anything , as I own both , but I would personally get the GTX260 because the Driver updates are more reliable and push a lot more power out of the 260 right now , ATI may have better hard ware but they dont have the software or drivers to utilize it.

i agree...i still had stock 9600 GT drivers for the longest time

i updated to the 185.XX drivers for it and WHOA

my FPS on COD4 at overgrown with everything max went from 45 FPS to 75 FPS solid

and in crysis warhead everything max went from 25 FPS to 32 FPS(out of jungle) with 4 AA

great FPS increase

Speaking of Crysis Warhead , what are your settings in it with the 9600GT? I'm very curious as I used to run on just a 9800GTX+ and could barely play the game a gamer settings at 1280x720.

I'm still running 180.84 on my 9600GT. Worth updating is it? *Goes to run some benchmarks*

I'd say its worth updating , unless you have a 9800GTX+ like I used to , for some reason those drivers messed with that card and that one only , made me blue screen or crash every time I played Crysis for 2 or more hours.

NVIDIA's drivers are hit-and-miss depending on your system configuration. Once I find one that works in everything I use it for (180.84 for example) I camp. I used to upgrade religiously with every beta.

I didnt know 185.85 was Beta so I just upgraded and regretted it. Game runs better , but I crash , every single other game runs awesome though.
