price to performance purely

280 is around 145-150
280x 175-180

is there a noticeable difference in performance above that of the price difference?

will be using an fx 8320 with it

both models will be msi twin frozr unless the gigabyte windforce is on sale

Solution
Clock to clock there is 5% difference between 280 and 280X.

You'll need 1100/1500 on 280 to reach 280X performance.

This my Vapor-X new bios, modded and overclocked. 7500 in firestrike.

Yeah, but with games graphics cards are the most important. Waiting two months for a card expected to knock off the GTX 970 at about the same price as an R9 280X while sucking less power seems like a good deal to me. However each to their own.

Graphics cards are the only part I would ever consider waiting for.
And really AMD only releases new cards in each price range about every 18 months-2 years so you'll have the best AMD card in that price range for at least 18 months. Just saying.

I just get the feeling that the HBM (high bandwidth memory) being introduced in the R9 380X will be an important technology for the future, but in any case you know what you want. Enjoy your epic new card. I saw an R9 280X that had never been used go for $170 only a couple of weeks ago so there are bargains to be had.

Its a very powerful card. Capable of Ultra settings and smooth frame rates in every game I can think of.
Tends to be a lot of cheap ones floating around too now that the Nvidia 970 is out.

However make sure you've got good cooling and a 600w power supply to keep it running smoothly.
If you still haven't found the deal you want in January I still highly recommend waiting for the 380X. It will be cheaper, more efficient, and probably more powerful than the R9 290.

EDIT: The 600w PSU recommendation is the minimum I would go with for an R9 290. A 650w setup can sometimes be more ideal depending on the quality of the 600w PSU.
