I just built it last night and it is my first build...but is there any reason that the screens before windows boots tell me that the CPU temp is 37C after the thing has been shut off overnight in a 22C room? I havent touched overclock settings at all

I have 2x80mm fans blowing in from the front, 1x80mm fan blowing out the top, 1X120mm fan blowing out the back, the psu has an 120mm sucking in case air and 80mm blowing out the back, and there is a breathing hole i guess youd call it in the side window adjacent to the CPU cooler

While in BIOS it was reading 40-42C after it had been on for a few minutes and that didnt seem right to me, so when i was ready to sleep i turned the thing off and checked it this morning...within 10 seconds of pressing the power button, the CPU temp was displayed as 37C

Yea, as long as you don't Have frequent and/or reoccuring Errors Due to Heat problems and It stays below 55-60*C You'll be just Great.

I would try to keep it under 50c, but 55c is still something you can deal with.
But what comes to those temperatures - It's totally normal so no problemo.

i guess my main question was if the reading was right...

40C idle seems a little high to me for a system that isnt overclocked at all with a 120 mm cpu fan, also the fact that it says its at 37C literally within 5-10 seconds from turning it on after it has been sitting with no power in a room that is about 22C for 8 hours

hopefully im just being paranoid and all is normal

Geez, this reminds me of everyone always complaining about Intels running hot.

To be honest, that chip shouldn't be running that warm at idle and in my opinion, that's not normal. 31-35C at idle is normal to me. Every machine I've ever put together usually idles at those temps.

My X2 3800+ idles around 34C and rarely climbs above 42C at load.
I have Cool and Quiet disabled. It's running at a mild overclock to 2.2 ghz.
But keep in mind, I used Artic Silver 5 on the heatsink and I've got a massive Zalman all-copper heatsink on it.
My case is an Antec model with a 120mm intake at the bottom front, a 120mm exhaust, a 120mm fan on the 450watt power supply, and a slot fan to remove the heat from around my video card.
So, yeah, you have a little bit of room for improvement -- but 37C is nothing to worry about.
Please do remember that 37 C is only 98.6 F. That's body temperature! Your own internal organs are happily running along at that temperature, so there's no reason your CPU shouldn't be fine.
Here's a handy guide for Americans like me who don't normally use the Celsius scale for anything.
