3pin to 2 pin fan connection

I changed a fan in one of our office computers, however the mobo header only has 2 pins, do i need an adapter to fix this or is there an easier solution?

Red/black/yellow on the new fan? Just make sure the red and black are wired in, or there are adaptors on newegg amongst other sites to plug it straight to the psu

The 3 Pin fan will fit onto the 2 pin you just need to match the holes and the pins and see which two contacts make the fan function.

That's what i hoped would work but it didn't want to spin no matter which way i put it on. It has black/red/blue cables on the fan.

Red and black should be power and ground, blue will be the pwm line, tells the mobo how fast its spinning

No matter which combination you try, the Red will always connect to one of the pin headers if it is in the center. All you need to do is first try the Black and red to connect to the headers and see if it works.

It worked for me. I bought a new fan, took out its wires from the socket with a pocket knife(without cutting the wires, the pins lock inside the socket and they can be unlocked and taken out) and tried connecting them to the PSU pins in combinations of 2...

The fan is spinning with red/black and red/yellow combinations. Connect the red to the + sign or where the red wire of the old PSU is supposed to connect.

It also works if you use both black and yellow to connect the '- ve' pin(where the old fan's black wire was connected).

I think the Red/Black combination has a faster spin rate.

I rearranged the wires and put them back in the socket in the order I wanted and connected them to the PSU pins.

Don't know if doing this will affect the PSU in a bad way. It is working so far, which is 15 minutes.

In the beginning I also tried to plug the socket into the PSU pins and it did not work. That is because the wires are arranged in a way that both the combinations would not work. One because it is the combination of yellow/black and another because red wire is connected to the '-ve'(black wire) pin.
