So i just got the 4790k last week. Got to oc'ing (4.6) and monitoring temps today, and with my h100i the temps sit around 65 for the first 20 or so minutes and then just randomly shoot up to 100. I already reapplied the thermal paste and made sure the cooler was seated right but still happening the same way every time. This is with monitoring with realtemp, coretemp, and msi afterburner. Did i get a bad processor? I could still exchange it with microcenter.

I have an H100i and with the auto overclock/adaptive voltage on my Maximus VII I'm seeing right at 75 C with Aida64 at 4.6 ghz. Stock clock with turbo drops it down to 68-70 C. This is my first time overclocking so I tried it with the auto features, then went back to stock. I'll do it again, but manually once I find a good how-to.

I didn't test with Prime95 and adaptive voltage as I read it pushes the voltage way to high and can overheat the processor.

Go a Corsair 110 - Way more cubic flow . I have a 9590 - OC to 5.0GHz - I get under 29' C on idle and 50ish under load (Not tested with program - Installing 2 x games, downloading torrents + playing BF4 on triple screens.

Im getting very similar. My processor from ebuyer.com and Asus VII Hero from overclockers.co.uk .

80-85 on prime95. Reseated it many many times, cant get it any lower. Idle at 30-35c. Using a H80i cooler. Got washers on the backplate and as tight as i want to go.....

Some of the new 4790ks faulty?

Will try FPU tonight.

Also just received delivery of a H100i . Going to try that to see if any help.

The FPU is the Floating Point Unit integrated into the CPU. That is what generates most heat and usually holds you back. It is responsible for Floating Point Math. If it shoots close to 100, then that isn't stable.

What is the thermal compound you are using anyways? like what brand is it? i read the whole first page and skipped the 2nd page. you are also only putting a small dab on the CPU right? like pea sized amount.

I'd also like to post that I'm having the same exact issues as dusktildawn48. I have a corsair h100i with SP120s, and I've reseated my 4790K 5 times in the past 6 weeks and still shoot up to 100C and throttle in Aida64 FPU stress test at completely stock (bios left to default all the way, not even running RAM XMP). Is my cooler malfunctioning? Or do you guys think I just got a bad CPU as well. I use Arctic Silver 5 and have 5 140mm fans for airflow in a Fractal Design Arc Midi. My Motherboard is an Asus z97 Pro wifi ac

I kind of wish I had somebody else's CPU to test my cooler with, and I could answer a lot of questions, but that isn't going to happen. I may be able to sell my 4770K and mobo to my friend and get a 5820k and try it with my cooler. That would tell.
