4870 x2 or 4890??

I'm building my first gaming system. Can anyone offer an opinion as to which card I should go with. 4890 or the 4870 x2? I DO NOT intend to overclock.

I really don't have a budget for this syst em. I purchased a amd quad core processor, and corsair dominator ddr2 memory so far, and I have a HAF 932 case. As far as resolution I'm still thinking. I am looking to get 1000w power supply. I heard the ati cards run a little hotter than nvidia. Like I said it's my first system and I'm pretty new. Thank god for new egg.

My power supply will be 1000w
My memory is Corsair Dominator ddr2 4gb
HAF 932 case
AMD quad core processor
I have yet to get a mother board, because I have yet to choose my graphics card. I want to stay with ati but the nvidia 285 sounds good. I will probably be running a crossfire setup as well. I like the ati 4870 x2 but have not heard anything about how they run. This is my first build and I'm pretty new at all this stuff.

If you do not have a budget then the 4870 X2 is going to get you a lot more performance over the 4890.

Keep in mind, though, that if you want to simply play games at max settings both cards are going to handle pretty much anything you throw at them.

If you like to tweak and achieve maximum frames per second, benchmark scores, etc. for bragging rights or whatnot, then go for performance and enjoy.

Since you want to run Crossfire/SLi, just go for the 4870X2. Or if your budget permits, for an extra $100 you can get a GTX 295.

The 4870 X2 will tear into any game, but the 4890 will be perfectly fine as well. If you can afford the 4870 X2 then go for it, but don't be shy to stick with the 4890.

How about 4890 and then wait untill 4890 X2 come out and then get it.

If you can't wait then at 1920x1200 either card is fine!

What is the "Amd Quad Core CPU" you got? I do not believe the old Phenoms were compatible with DDR3. Since you already have the CPU i would suggest the 790FX or 790GX chipset with the 750SB. I would go for Ati over Nvidia so you can Crossfire in the future. Either card will max out a lot of games out there right now, but the 4870x2 would be a better investment for the future or you can get a 4890 now and add a second once later on.

The 4890x2 isn't too far out at this point. You may want to get a interim card or if your build won't be done for a while, just wait for it. It should be quite the beast until the next gen cards hit.
