I have a pentium 600 and had 2 64MB sticks and replaced
it with one 512MB Stick. For some reason it only
recognizes there to be 256MB of phsyical memory? Any
ideas on how to get the computer to utilize all of the
memory.... I looked in the bios and there seems to be no
setting for this at all. The physical memory portion is
displayed but you cannot change anything. Is it possible
the motherboard has a max of 256MB?? Any ideas are
welcome!

Might try a different slot. Same specs/speed? Might check on your motherboards website for help.

Mike;

Your computer is an old model, and is not capable of supporting PC133 RAM
modules. You will have to order memory that is compatible with your board.
A good place to find compatible memory is

www.crucial.com

Older mobo might certainly be limited to only 256 MB ,
either as a maximum per stick or a board total.

Get EVEREST from www.lavalys.com (free download) and scan
your computer to learn the exact make and model of the mobo
and the BIOS. Then you can check out the mobo manual
on-line and check with sites such as www.Crucial.com to see
what the limits are, what RAM is supported and if there is a
BIOS update that will increase your limits.

You probably have a high density (single sided) 512 mb stick of PC133
SDRAM.

Older motherboards (and a Pentium 600 is old in this context) very
often require the low density (double sided) PC133 SDRAM modules.
These modules are still available, but may have to be special ordered.
They are also close to double the price of the high density modules.

Good luck

Ron, I think, has the right idea about your problem. I ran into a similar
problem trying to upgrade my sisters Emachine. Installing single sided
256mb sticks would result in the machine only seeing 128mb. Found some
double sided 256mb sticks and installed 2 of them in the 2 slots available
for 512mb. Emachine and Crucial stated that the max memory size for that
model was 256mb. I don't think I've seen double sided 512 sticks but then I
haven't seen that many of them.

where do you see this? If in 'System Information' that is known to be
bugged in this matter. Check in Control Panel - System for the amount
shown at the bottom of the General page
