So when I built my budget son's gaming rig in 2020 I had no idea that AM4 tech would be EOL now. I guess just like phones.

CPU:Ryzen 7 5700x
CPU cooler: Noctua NH-D12L low profile (8 case fans blowing front to back and out)
Motherboard: MSI B450 Pro M2
Ram: Corsair 3200MHz 32GB (16x2)
SSD/HDD: 932 GB SSD CT1000MX SSD1, 3.64TB HDD ST4000D, 1.82TB HDD WDC WD20EZRZ
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 (8 GB)
PSU: Corsair 550W(bought in 2020 needs upgrade for sure 650 at least)
Chassis: Aero Cool mini tower
OS: Win 10 22H2
Monitor: HP Omen

Most playing time is on call of duty. Some elder scroll, some Assetto car sim, But we have to run COD at low settings to get 166 FPS which isn't that great in itself. 105 FPS on basic settings and 77 in ultra.

I'm not jumping on AM5 as I really don't have an issue but rather than buy a $1000 4070 GPU I found a 5700x3d for 260$ , granted they shou5be around 180$ now.

But for comparison my chip

5700x 8core 16thread 4.6GHz max boost, 3.4 base vs 5700x3d 8core 16 thread 4.1 Max boost 3.0 base freq. I do have a lowly b450 msi pro m2 board. But does the L3 cache make up for the frequency loss?

Is it worth it on this board? I mean im just trying to gain 3 more years until am6
FPS basic setting
FPS lowest setting

I ended up upgrading to a 5700x 8core 16 thread 4.6GHz max boost , 3.4 Ghz base and a RTX 4060 GPU (from a ryzen 5 something and Fatboy GPU) with a noctua NH D12L low height tower. I have 3 fans sucking air in from the front , 2 blowing air down throttle bottom of the case, 2 blowing air out the back directly on the cooler itself and on extra fan blowing air upwards out the top vent
Simpler to list the specs to your build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time. Adding images of your build's innards also help lend necessary info.

Besides Call of Duty, what other titles does your son game on and at what resolution?

IMHO, you should look into a higher pedigree board if you want to drop a Ryzen 5000 series X3D SKU processor onto a socket as they draw more power than the 3000 series processors that came at the same time as the B450 chipset boards. Lack of a proper VRM heatsink would only expedite the departure of your motherboard.

I found a 5700x3d for 260$
For that kind of money;
https://pcpartpicker.com/products/cpu/#sort=price&m=6&k=41
you're able to get a Ryzen 7 7700x;
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/WfqPxr/amd-ryzen-7-7700x-45-ghz-8-core-processor-100-100000591wof

I'd reduce details in gaming and hold off any purchase until AM6 is released, saving up until that time comes.

So the 5700X on the B450 board is decent enough then. 65W compared to 105W of the X3d. Seeing as that I would have better results or just makes more sense to upgrade the MB to a B550 at least(heatsinks and 4.0PCIe. Then I end up spending around 450$ plus a newer PSU at that would need it for sure. Man, I never thought it would have turned out like this.

We'll just live with it then on lower settings for now.

@ohio_buckeye ya strictly gaming. Some youtube and spotify. But I definitely should upgrade PSU. And maybe when GTA6 comes out and it can't handle it a GPU. And hopefully it can carry over.
