I have been using an HD 4890 for quite a while now, but I think it is time to upgrade.

Should I get the HD 5850 or HD 5870?? I do usually play at 1080 but I like to max everything out when I play. Will there be a big difference or should I just OC a 5850???

Thanks

Only because you are upgrading from a 4890, I would definatley recommend getting the 5870, that 5850 is just not a big enough upgrade from a 4890, the 5850 is a great card, just about maxes everything at 1650X1080 but at 1920X1080 you will have a handful of games that will slow down with full settings and high AA AF at 1920X1080, the 5870 is worth the extra money in your case IMO. Although as previously stated the 6000 series will be out soon and the "midrange" card will supposedly be faster than a 5850 and close to a 5870. However if you can't wait a few weeks or so for benchmarks and reviews, than I would upgrade to a gtx 470 or 5870.

on a side note, I saw a galaxy gtx 470 at frys electronics (las vegas) for $250 which looked like a great deal to me considering the 460s 1 gig sell for 200-240 there.

who knows what the 6000 will do to the value of existing cards but it is safe to say that you will only benefit from waiting for a few weeks or more because prices will be most likely lower and your 4890 is decently powerful for now.

Lost Planet 2, Dirt 2 even NFS shift with everything cranked up and 15 race cars in field at dusk eat gpu power. And you can't race a car at 30fps. You can more easily adjust a few settings down for 'good' gameplay with a single 5850 non o/c . Its not maxing out 'everything' :)
If someone is running a gtx 460 @675 , they are cheating themselves.

That or it is a really slow motion view of your up coming crash into a wall because your computer didn't register you were trying to turn that corner 5 minutes ago.

The HD5870 is only 5-10% faster than the HD5850 when overclocking is taken into account. It simply is not worth the extra $100. Same can be said of the GTX 470 vs the GTX 480.

good point, the 5850 is a better value, and if the gtx 470 can be found sub 300 it is probly the best value.

on a side note: I am wondering if adding another 5770 to my setup is worth it or if I am going to sell my current one and go with a single high end card. Its kind of hard to justify not doing it when i can gt a used one for 80 from a friend and already have a crossfire capable setup, (and 1 5770).

either way for 1920X1080 gaming 1 5770 is just not enough power.
