Could very well be. However, as it has already been said, AMD will already have a head start. I think most people take into account price/performance when they make purchases, and even when nVidia releases their cards and *if* they are better, AMD will have already been through a round of price cuts, with possibly acquiring a lot of market share, and still having a solid card performance-wise.

For people looking to build a new system (me), and launching with Windows7 and before the holiday season, AMD/ATI have really nailed their launch schedule, assuming they can hold to it.

so tell me...

why is there so much difference between a 4850 and a 4890 when the only difference is ddr5 vs ddr3...

core clock a bit but that doesnt matter as much as the memory type...

I think the DDR5 running at a higher frequency allows for a smaller bus to be used. The difference between the 4870X2 (256x2) vs the GTX295 (448x2). Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that is the main difference.

Also, the 4850 runs DDR3 at a 256-bit bus while the 4870/4890 run DDR5 with a 256-bit bus, again back to the memory frequency/type issue.

Either you are trolling or just extremely ignorant.

I am not ignorant as i love both brands...... I posted this just to see what would come out of it and it looks like worked...

There will always be a battle between both brands and it will never end...You cannot justify the the DDR5 over DDR3 ATM.. It's just different brands with different architectures aiming to be at the top spot.....

Fanboy's are welcome to give their opinion but in the end what really matters is what the card can do for you....

u can justify the use of 512bit with gddr5 with providing double bandwith and thus much highrer performance, against 512bit and gddr3 or 256bit gddr5...

The memory clock of course, but in the end you can't say " my Ati card is faster than yours cause I have DDR5"....

The whole issue of memory type and Bus width on the GPU is a s simple as this.

2 x 1 = 2
or
1 x 2 = 2

By that i am saying that the overall result is the same.

A 448 bit bus on the GT260 with GDDR3. (Bandwidth 111.9 GiB/s)
Is as adequate as.
A 256 bit bus on a HD4870 with GDDR5. (Bandwidth 115.2 GiB/s)

(if the GT260 went to GDDR5 it might not need a 448bit bus).

The GPU has to be powerful enough to use all that bandwidth for textures and such, so hence why the HD4850 with a 256 bit bus doesn't quite need GDDR5, it may of course get some benefit but not much. Cost is also a factor as GDDR5 costs more than GDDR3.

The overall bandwidth is all that matters, and if that bandwidth is
adequate for the GPU.

actually u can...

if ur owner of a 4870 u can say my card is faster than ur 4850 because of the ddr5, which provides almost double the bandwith...

remember when they did something really stupid and created a 4850 with ddr5? it has a lot more performance, being on pair with the 4870...

But that is common sense, I am comparing Ati's DDR5 vs. Nvidia's DDR3.....

Anyways I just wanted you all to keep this in mind...... [:jaydeejohn:5]

I think in my opinion nvidia is going to use gddr5 with 320/384bit. Anything higher would be to costly. Also 320-400 stream processor, 640mb and 1280mb. well thats what i would do.
=P

That would be sweet, can you imagine 400 sp's? Kinda overkill ATM but it would be nice to see it in action..... [:lectrocrew:6]

Ya putting 512sp, 512bit its just way to costly i cant afford that. The 8800gtx was expensive as hell when it came out. its a good balance having 320-384sp, gddr5, 320/384bit, 640/1280 video ram seems good to me and decent clocks.

necrophilia?

ya, and overclk is correct.
GDDR3 with 448 and 512 bandwidth VS GDDR5 with 256 bandwidth is what makes the two GPUs equal despite RAM differences.

Nvidia's GPU is the equivalent of 4 lane highway with a 40mph speed limit while ATI is the equivalent of a 2 lane highway with a 80mph speed limit.

But just imagine playing Warhead "maxxed" out with a GPU of that CALIBER on a 30" LCD....... That would be heaven.... [:lectrocrew:5]

While you cant justify using GDDR5 agaibst a similarly half clocked GDDR3 with a 512 bus, while the GDDR5 has only a 256 bus, you can justify the cheaper, more user friendly costs.
Then again, if you have a core that can use it, using GDDR5 with a 512 bus, then GDDR3 is dead, period

As for the x2 card, my prediction is, wait til next year. I heard it from a good source awhile ago, and its cropping up as a "official" rumor now.
But thats to be expected, There was a 2 month difference between the 4870 and the x2
