Question 5gig ethernet but download speeds are way low, what is wrong ?

I had 5 gig google fiber installed today, my pc is hooked up to ethernet. My motherboard is capped at 2.5gig ethernet. Did speed tests and they show 2500mbps up and down but when i try to download anything it only downloads at 10-20mbps. Ive watched atleast 20 youtube videos trying to figure it out.

Where you are trying to download from could be limiting your speed. If you are getting the 2.5Gb/s in speedtest, then you are getting all you pay for.

steam,riot,blizzard, just games in general. the speedtest shows im getting the correct speed but when i start a download i only get like 10mbps I should be getting a lot more. i tried downloading a game on my mac through wifi and I was getting 175mbps

It might be a setting in one of those clients. You could i guess try a download from the browser like going to microsoft and download something big like a windows install image.

Speedtest is actually a file download and upload that is not kept so it mostly appears your connection is working.

You can also look for any software that claims to accelerate game traffic. This is bundled with the bloatware that comes with many motherboards and video card. It causes all kinds of strange issue and does not really do much. A common name is cfosspeed but anything that talk about qos or favoring one type of traffic over another should be uninstalled.

You're probably reading the wrong number from Steam, etc.
megabits vs megaBytes.
8:1 ratio.

Also, those services aren't filling up everyones pipe at the same time. They have limits on how much they feed you.

yeah ive tried all of those options, tried changing the download settings for all of the applications, tried changing adapter settings etc, the download speed hit 70mbs earlier but then shot back down to 20. it also has a problem with the download hitting 0. when i check the network performance through task manager the send and receive numbers are really low and says the network % is also low. Could it be my ssd causing the slow download speeds? i havent upgraded it since i got my pc in 2017 so it is really old. this is my ssd sandisk sdssda240g

I would not think the SSD would be the problem. You can do some basic testing by copy extremely large files between directories on the ssd. If the file is large enough you should be able to see the rates in the disk tab of the resource monitor.
It sometimes pops up a display that shows a graph of the copy not sure why it is not 100% of the time.
Note these screens show data rates in Bytes so you need to multiply by 8 to get bits.

If the SSD has actual problems you might see errors in the event viewer.

When you downloaded from microsoft site did you get the same slow transfer.

Game installers can be kinda strange. I never figure it out really. Some games on steam will down load at say 800mbps and other will barely be above 100mbps. I consistently get close to my maximum internet speed on microsoft site.

Maybe another idea since you said you have a mac. Can you share files between the machines. It might be interesting to copy files back and forth and see what you get on a local connection.
